Lakeland advances to regional title game

- SOFTBALL

RATHDRUM — Allison Russum went 5 for 5 with a triple, double, five RBIs and three runs scored, and the top-seeded Lakeland Hawks rode a 24-hit attack to a 19-9 victory over the second-seeded Sandpoint Bulldogs on Tuesday to advance to the championship game of the 4A Region 1 softball tournament.

Lakeland (8-15) advances to Saturday’s championship round in Rathdrum, which begins at noon. Sandpoint (4-15) plays host to Moscow (4-12) on Thursday in a loser-out game. The winner advances to face Lakeland on Saturday, needing to beat the Hawks twice to win the regional title. Lakeland needs just one win on Saturday to advance to state. Sandpoint beat Moscow 18-8 earlier on Tuesday.

Erika Gallus went 5 for 5 with two doubles, two RBIs and five runs scored for Lakeland. Harley See hit a solo homer and finished 5 for 5 with four runs scored. Haylee Smit was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs.

Natalie Petit drove in four runs for Sandpoint, and Tanis Davis went 4 for 4 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored.

SPIRIT LAKE — The Timberlake softball team scored in double digits in 13 of its 15 regular season wins. So why should the postseason be any different?

Hosting the 3A District 1 softball tournament, the Tigers belted 14 hits and used a 10-run third inning to take control of a 20-5 win over Bonners Ferry in Tuesday’s opening game.

Priest River topped Kellogg in the nightcap, putting the Spartans (11-8) in Thursday’s 4 p.m. district championship against Timberlake, with the winner advancing to state.

The Tigers (16-1) scored in every way possible, as exemplified by sophomore Emma Howard, who had three hits and drove in five runs. In the second inning, her sacrifice bunt put Timberlake ahead 3-0. One inning later, Howard’s line drive cleared the fence in left center, finishing off the 10-run inning and putting the hosts ahead 16-1.

“I’m pleased we scored a lot of runs,” Tigers coach Casi Lupinacci said. “Emma had a good day, and so did Kyndal (Lindley) with a two-run double and two-run home run.”

Bernie Carhart threw all five innings for Timberlake, allowing only five Badger hits while striking out three.

“Bernie’s a strike thrower — I can always count on her,” Lupinacci said of her pitcher. “She’s consistant and she threw the ball well today.”

Hannah Beazer scored two runs for Bonners Ferry (0-13) and Mateya Falck added two hits for the Badgers, who scored four two-out runs in the fifth to possibly give them momentum heading into Thursday’s loser-out game against Kellogg.

“Errors killed us,” Bonners Ferry coach Chelsea Taggart said. “But the girls kept fighting until the end. Hopefully that will carry over to Thursday and we can compete better from the beginning of the game.”

SPIRIT LAKE — Kobe Harris went 4-for-4 with a triple, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs, and threw four shutout innings on the mound for Timberlake as the Intermountain League champions cruised past the Wildcats in the 3A District 1 opener at Timberlake High.

“We were firing in all phases today,” Tigers coach Cameron Knigge said. “A big shoutout to our only senior, Kobe Harris, who pitched a gem and helped himself with a big day at the plate, including his first career triple.”

Harris struck out six Wildcats, and Jacob Hessing completed the shutout with two strikeouts in the fifth inning as the host Tigers (15-8) advanced to Thursday’s 4:30 p.m. championship vs. Bonners Ferry, also at Timberlake High. The winner advances to the state tournament.

The Tigers had 13 hits and played an error-free game in the field. Louis Powell had two hits and knocked in three runs for Timberlake and Alex Drake belted a triple to help the hosts get off to a strong start, scoring four runs in both the first and second innings.

“With districts or any sort of tournament, there’s always nerves. When you can score early and settle in, you get into the flow the game quicker and play like you should play,” Knigge said.

In the other opening round game, Bonners Ferry defeated Priest River 17-4.

Kellogg sweeps district titles

PRIEST RIVER — Siblings Archie Rauenhorst and Kat Rauenhorst of Kellogg claimed medalist honors in the 3A District 1 tournament at The Ranch Club on Tuesday.

Kat Rauenhorst, a senior, won a playoff against Bonners Ferry’s Cali Iacolucci for the title.

Archie Rauenhorst shot a 3-over par 73 to win boys medalist.

Kellogg swept the team titles, with Timberlake’s girls finishing second to advance to the state 3A tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Canyon Springs Golf Course in Twin Falls.
