The heart of the matter
When you think of a disease that has the most controversy, it is the heart. Yet, for all intents and purposes, it is the most simplistic. What really matters to the heart is what is present to nourish it. Nourishment allows it to function. The lack thereof causes it to struggle to function. While there are many fancy names for the varying ways the heart can struggle, the way it responds to what goes into the mouth (or what doesn’t go into the mouth) is what matters the most.

New school, old school
Just after Christmas and during the week leading up to New Years we tried two great new wines. In many ways the wines could not be more different, while at the same time both posses many similarities. Not in flavor profile or winemaking, but in lineage and history. At the same time with these similarities, the wines are a study in wine made in a newer style vs. coming from the old-school process of grape growing, style and wine making. These contrasts and similarities are what makes wine so intriguing for the consuming public.
NATO: Globalist agenda alert
I was pleased to read in the Coeur d’Alene Press that Representative Russ Fulcher voted with all my other favorite Congressmen to oppose a “lock-in” of our involvement with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As the European Union continues to force their weaker members to accept overwhelming numbers of migrants, many worry that NATO will be the enforcement mechanism used to compel obedience. We don’t want our country to get suckered into a world war to secure the rights of EU bureaucrats to flood European countries in pursuit of some globalist agenda.

I have never seen so much hatred in our politicians. Being a conservative and independent, I did not vote for Mr. Obama. Anyone who said he wanted to “fundamentally change America” was not going to get my vote. How did Trump escape the mandatory six-month jail sentence for using the Presidential Seal on his personal golf course? Trump has had more than 50 scandals in the first two years he’s been in office. Obama admitted he made mistakes, but he hadn’t had one scandal in his eight years in office.

SLEEP: Apply simple test
Studies suggest later school start times would help sleepy students. Did the studies that make this case identify if torpor teenagers are a result of the quantity and quality of sleep or the timing of sleep (circadian rhythm)? If the latter, then moving school start time will affect different people differently, so the average effect is unknown. If it is the quantity of sleep and not the timing, then the CDC, AMA and AAP don’t appreciate what every single American knows as an absolute fact, people stay up later when they don’t have to get up as early. “Don’t stay up late, it’s a school night” said every parent every Sunday through Thursday night.

Zooming down from the heavens faster than any other bird is Idaho’s state raptor, the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). Now when I say “raptor,” I’m not talking about a velociraptor. Across much of the country, there is not much precipitation and temperature variability over a distance of 30 miles. Poking holes in Mann's 'global cooling' assertions
I’m writing in response to Randy Mann’s “Sunspot Activity is Non-Existent” weather column that was published in the Press on Nov. 26 of last year. In the column Mann predicts that a multidecadal period of low sun activity, called a grand solar minimum, would begin in the next year or two. If this were to occur, he says it would trigger a period of planetary cooling. He goes on to describe how less sunspot activity (such as during the Maunder Minimum 300 years ago) caused the European “Little Ice Age,” and how greater sunspot activity was responsible for the Medieval Warm Period. He also cites some recent scientific studies that he says support these ideas. I work in the sciences and this narrative didn’t sound quite right to me, so I took a look at the research studies he mentioned. Here is what I learned — and it isn’t pretty.

SHUTDOWN: Compromise, or extortion?
How did we get to the shutdown and what compromises do the parties want? Before Christmas, the Republican Senate passed a bill to keep government open until February so immigration issues could be worked out (again/still). But the House Republicans added “Trump’s wall” at his request and sent it back. The Senate would not allow any vote on the added wall, so the Trump/Republican shutdown started. Trump was proud to do so.

It is that time of the year when many motorists wonder if they need to let their vehicle “warm up” or idle before driving. BOCC: Serve the people
Recently, I have been purging my files from the last 15 years of work in Kootenai County issues regarding land use, and it never ceases to amaze me, the more things change… the more things stay the same. Those placing a high value on the importance of rural communities within this county (study after study has shown people want rural areas for North Idaho protected) know how those areas provide much of the desirability of North Idaho. Many of the same compelling arguments in opposing non-conforming proposals (often in the form of Conditional Use Permits) that were made 10 or 11 years ago are seen today. The only difference recently, some of the decision makers from the recent past tended to lean toward the property rights of land owners without taking into consideration what is truly in the best interest of the county as a whole. Perhaps this filters down from a similar national attitude that has so profoundly divided our nation… “What’s best for me is right and don’t ask me to consider what is in the best interest for the country/state/county/city as a whole; doesn’t matter to me.”

Our American Republic demands high standards of both citizens and their elected officials. One duty of citizenship is to respect the legitimacy of the electoral process, recognizing that in our system the moral right to rule comes from the consent of the governed. Civic virtue demands a period of healing after the partisan combat of the campaign. In this “honeymoon period,” we all are called to come together as Americans and recognize that whatever divides us is less significant than what unites us. We are supposed to wish the newly elected officials the very best of fortune in bearing our shared trust to manage our public business.

CHRISTIAN: A litmus test
Forty years ago, I studied theology. I also studied people. I found in any given Christian church, even though there is one lesson book called the Bible, 200 people can read it and 25 may argue various “doctrine.” Example, some say you must be baptized to be saved by the Grace of God. Some believe you can lose your salvation, others say once saved always saved. Some argue about end times and the tribulation, will it be before what Christians call the rapture, in the middle or after?

By DEVIN WEEKS
BALLOTS: Timing suspicious
An out of the blue recount of ballots for which there has been no concern or complaint. This wild hair demand occurring only days after several letters appeared in this paper acknowledging the competence and integrity of Carrie Phillips. Mr. Brannon asked her to resign after 17 years heading the elections office successfully and without controversy. The printed expressions on the faces of those elections office employees speak volumes.
CONGRESS: Do your job
Republicans must be rational and reopen the government. Common sense demands business-as-usual while pursuing comprehensive immigration reform. Mr. Trump’s last-minute demand for a wall ignores two years of Republican control — they cannot now blame the Democrats.
PLOWS: A little help, please
A week or so ago my son came over to help plow the driveway, sidewalks mailbox and parking area. As we were finishing, here come three city snowplows doing about 40 to 45 mph, throwing rocks and snow everywhere — sidewalks, mailbox and on my son’s car in the driveway. It was a mess.

Mitchell, Wilson fuel Timberwolf victory

CONGRESS: Pay to play
Our government has degenerated into a game played by Democrats and Republicans who do not represent Americans. Our Congress is made up mostly of lawyers who, according to Ben Carson, “Have been trained to win at any cost” and it seems even to the loss of our own sovereignty.

TRUMP: Victim of conspiracies?
The tone of my regular correspondence to our local paper has been most unfavorable of the current administration. Let’s change it up a little.
NATION: Christian argument continues
In the December 28 editorial, “Let’s Not Quibble Over Christian Nation,” an anonymous editorialist urged readers to consider historian David Holmes’ book “The Faiths of the Founding Fathers.” While this in itself is an “appeal to authority” logical fallacy, it’s worth pointing out the flawed assumption Holmes uses to categorize the “largest group” of Founders as “non-Christian” deists. It’s an assumption based on the presence of “deist” buzzwords within selected quotations. Words such as “Creator” or “Nature’s God” are the “postulations of deists” as Holmes put it. Therefore they must be deists he incorrectly concludes. Conveniently forgotten are quote after quote from these same individuals containing irrefutable Christian principles.
