Good enough so far for Post Falls

POCATELLO — After a frantic first day of the state 5A wrestling tournament, Post Falls coach Pete Reardon had to deliver a dose of reality to his team.

And that’s with the Trojans holding seven semifinalists and a 24.5-point lead in the team race.

Roddy Romero (98 pounds), Lane Reardon (120), Isaac Jessen (126), A.J. De La Rosa (138), Ridge Lovett (145), Tyler Morris (160) and Wyatt Shelly (170) advanced to today’s semifinal round for Post Falls, which leads with 131.5 points. Centennial High of Boise is second with 107. Coeur d’Alene, with six semifinalists of its own, is fourth with 93 points, just a half-point behind Highland.

“There’s a lot of points left out there,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “The semifinals are going to be big for us.”

Coeur d’Alene will send Dylan Moffat (106), Dom Jessos (113), Payton Keough (132), Nolan Randles (138), Gunner Giulio (152) and Mitchell Moffat (160) in the semis today.

“It would be nice to push five of those guys into the finals,” Jeff Moffat said. “We might be outgunned in two, but the others we’ve got a good shot in. It’s going to be a dogfight for the top four. We’ve got to win those consolation matches and punch some guys through to the finals. There’s a lot of points out there still.”

Post Falls ran away with the 2018 title, scoring a classification record 338.5 points and 15 semifinalists. The Trojans are seeking their fourth state title in five years.

“I had to tell them to have a little perspective,” Reardon said. “This isn’t last year, and it’s not normal to get 15 into the semifinals. Seven (semifinalists) is still the most in 5A. We lost some close matches in the quarterfinals, but the kids are fighting hard and they just need to keep fighting in the right direction.”

Lovett, already a three-time state champion, improved to 167-0 with a quarterfinal win over Levi Bailey of Skyview by pin in 33 seconds in a 145-pound quarterfinal.

“He just went out and took care of business,” said Reardon of Lovett.

Caden Hess (106), Seth Nutting (160), Elijah Mills (170) and Owen Hughes (285) advanced to the semis for Lake City, which is fifth with 86 points.

Finals in all four classifications are scheduled for around 2:30 p.m. PST.

4A: Sam Edelblute (126), Ryan Quimby (145) and Colton Boettcher (160) advanced to the semifinals for Lakeland, which is fifth with 72.5 points.

Kuna leads with 127.5 points.

3A: Timberlake went 4-for-4 in quarterfinal matches, advancing Isaiah Evans (126), Caleb Miller (152), Josh Yanez (170) and Joe Follini (182) to the semifinals.

Timberlake is ninth with 59 points. Sugar-Salem, the two-time defending champion, leads with 110.

2A: Dylan Sotin (98) was the lone semifinalist for St. Maries, which is tied with Challis for 11th with 37 points.

Ririe — the four-time champion — leads with 107 points.
