| February 20, 2019 12:00 AM

TROY — The third time proved to be the charm for St. Maries when it comes to Grangeville this season.

St. Maries, which lost both Central Idaho League matchups to Grangeville, knocked off the Bulldogs 48-45 in Game 1 of the best-of-3 2A District 1-2 series on Tuesday at Troy High.

Grangeville beat St. Maries 65-60 at St. Maries Jan. 12 and 56-42 at home on Jan. 26 in league play.

“I thought we played really good defense throughout tonight,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We did a much better job of controlling the tempo and getting back on defense.”

Dan Howard had 14 points and eight rebounds, Eli Gibson eight points, eight rebounds and four steals and Kaden Hammond seven rebounds and five steals for St. Maries (16-6), which can clinch a berth to the state tournament with a win Thursday against Grangeville at 6 p.m. in Troy. If Grangeville wins Thursday, the teams will play again on Saturday at Troy for the district’s lone berth to state.

“Our kids did a great job of controlling the boards and holding them to one shot most of the time.”

Trey Dreadfulwater scored 23 points for Grangeville (17-4).

COEUR d’ALENE — Ben Zubaly scored 18 points for the second-seeded Hawks, but foul trouble caught up to Lakeland in a loss to the top-seeded Bears at North Idaho College’s Rolly Williams Court in Game 1 of the best-of-3 4A Region 1 championship series.

Lakeland trailed 51-45 after three quarters before Moscow pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Hawks for the third time in three tries this season.

“It was a good game,” Lakeland coach Dave Stockwell said. “It was really close until we fouled a few guys out in the fourth quarter. Moscow’s a really good team and you can’t lose two starters (Noah Haaland and Ammon Munyer). We had to foul late, and you just can’t make mistakes against those guys.”

Benny Kitchel scored 26 points, Gabe Quinnett 24 for Moscow (18-3).

Game 2 is Friday at Bear Den in Moscow at 6 p.m.
