NAMPA — After Thursday’s loss to Nezperce, Genesis Prep coach Brandon Haas asked his team a question during a team meeting following the game.

“How do you want to finish?”

The Jaguars responded by not losing again.

Bella Murekatete had 19 points and 22 rebounds and Rachel Schroeder added 17 points for the Jaguars in a 41-33 win over the Kendrick Tigers of the White Pine League in the state 1A Division II consolation championship game at Nampa High on Saturday.

“It was a nice game,” said Murekatete, who has signed to play at Washington State. “Everyone played hard as a team and it was great to finish with a win.”

“We did the same thing as we did yesterday (Friday),” Haas said. “And that was finish what we started. After the game Thursday, I asked them ‘How do you want to finish this season,” and just told them to go out and play like they do.”

Genesis Prep held Kendrick scoreless through the first quarter, building an 11-0 lead.

“We held them scoreless, but had trouble scoring ourselves,” Haas said. “We just swarmed them on defense, and our rebounding won us the game. We just couldn’t hit a shot.”

Genesis Prep was runner-up in 2018 and third in 2017 in its other previous trips to state. This is only the fourth season the program has been sanctioned by the Idaho High School Activities Association.

“It was really important to get the job done today,” Schroeder said. “We just had to fight back and get a win.”

Genesis Prep, which beat Rockland in a loser-out game Friday, finishes 14-11. Kendrick finished 19-6.

The 6-foot-5 Murekatete finished the tournament with 58 points, 55 rebounds, nine assists and 12 blocked shots.

“I told the kids it was a 20-game preseason, and then you get to play for the real stuff,” Haas said. “We learned what our strengths and weaknesses were, and put those into action this week. The girls went out and played really well these last two games and showed they wanted to finish strong.”
