Genesis Prep to play for consolation title
NAMPA — The Genesis Prep Jaguars weren’t ready to go home quite yet.
Bella Murekatete notched another double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds as Genesis Prep beat the Rockland Bulldogs 59-40 in a loser-out game at the state 1A Division II girls basketball tournament Thursday night at Nampa High.
Murekatete, the Washington State signee, also had five assists and four blocked shots for Genesis Prep (13-11), which plays Kendrick (19-5) today at 8:15 a.m. PST at Nampa High in the consolation championship game.
Senior point guard Rachel Schroeder also scored 19 points for the Jaguars, who shot 52 percent (26 of 50 from the floor). Senior Emily Martinez chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Kiersley Boyer led Rockland (20-6) with 13 points. The Bulldogs shot just 27.3 percent (15 of 55) from the field.
Genesis Prep will be playing for its third trophy in the three years the Jaguars have qualified for state. The Jaguars placed third at state two years ago, and second last year.
