Celebrate Elmer Currie's 99th birthday on Saturday
COEUR d’ALENE — The community is invited to celebrate Elmer Currie and wish him a happy birthday during an open house on Saturday.
The former Kootenai County commissioner is turning 99 years young. Currie served as commissioner for four years in the 1970s, served in the Navy and volunteered to join the Marine Corps during World War II and was a successful and well-known homebuilder in the Coeur d'Alene area for many years.
Currie was an undefeated boxing champ during his time as a Marine. He has also been known as "Mr. Horseshoe" for his love of the game and his work to install a horseshoe facility in Coeur d'Alene, first at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds and permanently at Winton Park. A local horseshoe tournament, the Elmer Currie Classic, was created to honor his contribution to the sport. He was inducted into the Idaho State Horseshoe Pitcher's Hall of Fame in 2014.
The birthday celebration will be held in the Currie residence, 2062 E. Best Ave., Coeur d'Alene, from 3 to 6 p.m.
