Arlene Gibbs ‘Sue’ Sausser, 83
Arlene Louise Gibbs “Sue” Sausser, 83, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, died on Feb. 13, 2019, at North Idaho Hospice. Sue was born March 30, 1936, to Charles Hugh Gibbs and Gertrude Elizabeth (Kersting) Gibbs, in Long Beach, Calif. She was raised and attended schools in Long Beach. She was awarded a degree in elementary education from the University of Southern California and taught in the Los Angeles School District.
Sue married Donald Walden Sausser of Compton on June 25, 1960. They had two sons and resided in Running Springs, Calif., for eight years. The family moved to Kennewick, Wash., in 1972, then to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in 1973, where Sue taught in the Coeur d’Alene School District as a substitute and her husband continued his employment with General Telephone Company for 33 years.
Don and Sue “pioneered” and resided on 60 acres in Mica Flats for 30 years where the family built their house, developed a spring for water and built nearly two miles of driveway. They moved to Coeur d’Alene Lake Tower apartments in 2003.
Sue was a longtime member of the Mica Flats Women’s Club, Mica Flats Grange, Coeur d’Alene Art Association and the Mica Flats Tuesday Morning Bible Study. She enjoyed artistic painting and was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Art Association. She also was a volunteer leader of the county health district’s Fit & Fall Proof program for seniors. She enjoyed going to local concerts and musical events. She and Don were longtime members of the North Idaho College Booster Club and enjoyed being host parents for NIC athletic students.
Sue is survived by Donald, her husband of 58 years; two sons: Bradley of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Gregg of Post Falls, Idaho; five granddaughters: Cara, Elisa, Kali McMillan, Brooke and Megan; and three great-granddaughters, Juliet Switzer, Evelyn Switzer and Thea Switzer.
The family prefers that any desired contributions be made in her name to the North Idaho College Foundation.
