NIC: A sports bias

| February 13, 2019 12:00 AM

Once again Al Williams has shown his lack of concern of any other sport besides men’s basketball. In Steve Cameron’s column on North Idaho College exploring a new gym on National Women in Sports Day, Al Williams points out men’s basketball as the focus.

Al alludes to the dead spots in the gym floor but fails to say around $350,000 of taxpayer’s money was used for the new gym floor a few years ago. I just so happen to have a coffee table made of that dead gym floor from when I was attending NIC. Why does a floor that is around five years old have dead spots?

Mr. Williams misses a chance to highlight the volleyball teams many trips to the national tournament, but instead mentions men’s basketball undefeated regular season, before losing their last two games adding to the last game won in men’s basketball at a national tournament is dated way back in 1997. If he did not want to give credit to a women’s sport, maybe women’s basketball, an NJCAA champion in 2011? Should the AD not have mentioned NIC’s best sport, wrestling, along with its many undefeated seasons and 14 NJCAA titles?

Steve points out a crowded trophy case. It’s crowded because of the above-mentioned sports along with women’s CC NJCAA title and women’s soccer and softball all placing higher than the men’s basketball 4th place finish in 1997. Steve Cameron and Al Williams, you both once again missed an opportunity to give credit where credit is due!
