William Elton Stone, 89

June 6, 1929 – Feb. 7, 2019

William Elton Stone was born at home on June 6, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., to parents Elton and Florence Stone (deceased). He had one sister, Eileen (deceased). Bill attended St. Francis Catholic School through high school. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. Bill married Geraldine “Jeri” Miller (deceased) on Aug. 5, 1950. He was blessed with five devoted children: Gail, Geralyn, Jeff, Gwenn and Billy.

Bill was a Chicago firefighter for six years. He then became a Los Angeles policeman, serving for 30 years before retiring as a lieutenant. During his tenure, he worked in many divisions including Narcotics, Vice, Internal Affairs, Juvenile and Homicide. As a police officer, he was known for his integrity, professionalism, ease to work with and he had a calm and thoughtful demeanor.

After retirement, Bill and Jeri moved to Avondale Lake in Hayden, Idaho. He enjoyed beer and had a clear appreciation of a cold IPA. His wonderful wife, Jeri, passed in 2010.

Bill was a long-standing parishioner of St. Thomas Catholic Church. His family, along with his strong Catholic faith, occupied his retirement until his passing after a short illness.

Bill is remembered by his children, Gail (Ron) Walter, Geralyn (Tom) Regan, Jeffery (Cathy) Stone, Gwenn Stone (Lane Wintermute) and Bill (Kelli) Stone. Bill is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019. The time and location will be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be provided to Schneidmiller Hospice House of North Idaho.
