Post Falls girls come up short in bid for state

GRANGEVILLE — Post Falls wasn’t able to capitalize on a strong start, and fell 56-39 to the Meridian Warriors in a state 5A play-in game Saturday at Grangeville High.

The Trojans jumped out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter, only to see Meridian change defenses and outscore Post Falls 49-24 the rest of the way.

“In the first quarter we got out and got in transition a little bit,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “They were pressing us, and we got by it and got some transition baskets. In the second quarter they switched (from man) to an extended zone. We struggled to find shots, and we struggled to get the ball inside.”

Sophomore Dylan Lovett led Post Falls with 15 points, and junior Ali Carpenter added 11.

The Trojans had won a loser-out game over Lewiston on Tuesday, then won in overtime at Coeur d’Alene on Thursday to advance to the play-in game.

“We ran out of gas; we didn’t have the same energy we had earlier in the week,” Allert said. “They gave everything they had.”

Sophomore forward Jaleesa Lawrence scored a game-high 16 points for Meridian (14-12), which plays top-ranked and undefeated Mountain View in the first round at state Thursday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa. Junior guard Taylor Watson added 13 points for the Warriors.

Post Falls, which graduated nearly everyone from last year’s state championship team, finished 7-18. The Trojans had just two seniors (Jenna Gardiner and “Bubba” Gleaves) on this year’s roster, with Gardiner the lone returnee with significant playing time from last year.

“I’m super proud of what these kids did,” Allert said. “We got better, and we were one game from making the state tournament. We hung together (through the losses) and bonded together.”

The winner faces defending 3A champion Sugar-Salem (21-2) in the opening round of the state tournament on Thursday at 12:15 p.m. PST at Skyview High in Nampa.

COEUR d’ALENE — Cameron Washington (152 pounds), Ian Hampton (170), Shean Hodge (195) and Logan Parson (220) won their respective weight brackets at the Lake City JV tournament.

Jacob Krous (126) and Jackson Kohal (285) won titles for Coeur d’Alene. Taistan Shaw (132) won his bracket for Post Falls.
