Post Falls goes 6-0 in 5A IEL for third straight year

COEUR d’ALENE — Terrell Mitchell scored 13 points and Colby Gennett had 10 points and five rebounds, leading the Post Falls Trojans to a 69-45 win over the Lake City Timberwolves in 5A Inland Empire League play on Friday at Lake City High.

Jack Kiesbuy scored 21 points, hitting 13 of 13 from the free-throw line, for Lake City (3-15, 0-6 5A IEL).

“There were some moments where we did some good things,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “We came out and executed well, but kind of had a lull in the second and third quarter. Playing against a team like Post Falls, you can’t have any lulls. They made some runs and we couldn’t recover. At times, we did some good things and played hard. But against Post Falls, if you’re not running your stuff, you’re going to have some problems. And they shot the ball well tonight.”

Alex Horning and Caden McLean scored 11 points each for Post Falls (15-6, 6-0), which hosts Lake City in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament next Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The Trojans completed their third straight unbeaten run through the 5A IEL.

Seth Hanson scored 12 points for Lake City, which hosts Lakeland on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — At Viking Court, the visiting Bengals made 10 of 21 3-pointers and took home-court advantage away from the Vikings when the two teams meet again next Friday in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.

Donaven Santana hit three 3s and scored a game-high 23 points for Lewiston (9-11, 3-3 5A Inland Empire League), which tied for Coeur d’Alene (12-6, 3-3) for second place in the league. Coeur d’Alene won by eight points at Lewiston in mid-January. Since the Bengals won the rematch by more than eight, Lewiston won the tiebreaker, and will host the Vikings in the regional opener at Booth Hall.

“We just made the road a little bit tougher,” Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna said.

Kash Lang hit three 3s and added 15 points for Lewiston, and Dylan Johnson and Joel Mullikin each hit two 3s.

“There were a lot of things they did a good job of tonight, and we did a poor job of tonight,” Hanna said. “Santana is a really good guard; he does a lot of things. He’s hard to keep in front of you, and they surround him with shooters than could knock down shots.”

Drew Hostetter led Coeur d’Alene with nine points.

Coeur d’Alene travels to Sandpoint today at 5:30, then hosts Moscow next Tuesday to wrap up the regular season.

SPIRIT LAKE — The chances were there for the Tigers late, but the shots just were not.

Chase Gardom scored nine of his 13 points in the second quarter, and Jacob James scored 16 for the Tigers in a nonleague loss to the Bears.

“Chase got really active and took the ball to the basket and did a great job tonight,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “We had a couple of different chances, stole the ball and got some chances to tie it, but just couldn’t hit.”

James hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 53-50 for Timberlake, which lost at Moscow 76-42 on Jan. 16.

“It was a great game,” Menti said. “We played really well for a half the last time we played them, and our focus was to put four quarters together tonight. And the boys did a great job of playing the entire game.”

Gabe Quinnett scored 19 points for Moscow (16-3).

Dawson Cramer scored 11 points for Timberlake (7-11), which visits Lakeland today at 4 p.m.

COEUR d’ALENE — Scott Stockwell, girls basketball coach at Coeur d’Alene, resigned effective Friday, according to Scott Maben, director of communications for Coeur d’Alene Public Schools.

Stockwell, in his third season as Vikings head coach, was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday, Maben said, declining further comment as it was a personnel matter.

Assistant coach Nicole Symons coached the team on Thursday, in a loser-out second-place game in the 5A Region 1 tournament. The Vikings lost to Post Falls 41-40 in overtime to finish 7-12.

In three seasons under Stockwell, the Vikings were 21-40.

North Idaho Christian wins two, advances to MCL tourney final

PULLMAN — Two wins on Friday moved second-seeded North Idaho Christian School into today’s Mountain Christian League tournament finals, where the Royals will square off with host Pullman Christian at 5:30 p.m.

NICS (21-5) topped Kootenai Thunder 56-29 in its opening game on Friday, then pulled out a 38-28 win over The Oaks, which was the MCL’s third seed. After a close first half, the Royals outscored The Oaks 15-4 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Savannah Seeley scored 15 points to lead NICS, with teammate Sarah Hines adding 7 points and six steals. Imelda Bresee grabbed 17 rebounds for the Royals.

Grace Netjes led The Oaks with 12 points.
