Lovett-Giulio bout highlights Coeur d'Alene-Post Falls dual

| February 9, 2019 12:00 AM

POST FALLS — In an effort to get a little stronger as a team, Post Falls senior Ridge Lovett stepped up a weight and took on the challenge of Coeur d’Alene’s Gunner Giulio.

“Moving him up just made us a little stronger for the dual,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “Ridge really wanted to wrestle him, and Gunner’s a really, really tough kid and is about Ridge’s size. We were just trying to move some guys around for matchups that made sense.”

Lovett beat Giulio by a 6-0 decision for the Trojans, who claimed the dual 54-21 over the Vikings at The Arena on Friday.

Lane Reardon (120 pounds), Isaac Jessen (126), A.J. De La Rosa (138) and Isaiah Laguna (220) had pins for Post Falls.

“I was proud of how the kids wrestled,” Reardon said. “They competed hard. We knew going in that Coeur d’Alene is a tough team and that it was going to be a tough week with Lakeland (on Wednesday) and Coeur d’Alene back-to-back, but our kids wrestled hard tonight. We had a lot of good matches, which is good to have this time of year.”

Payton Keough got Coeur d’Alene off to a strong start with a pin in the first period at 132, the first weight of the night.

“I think our kids wrestled real well; I was proud of the way we battled,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “I thought we could have won a couple matches that we lost. All week we just asked them to go out and battle. They (the Trojans) have got a great lineup; there’s no secret to that. But I like the way we’re wrestling heading into districts.”

Next up for both teams is the 5A Region 1 tournament Feb. 16 at Lakeland High.
