North Idaho girls headed
to state wrestling invitational
Five girls high school wrestlers from North Idaho will be among more than 50 girls expected to compete in the inaugural Idaho state all-girls wrestling invitational this weekend in Pocatello.
This is the closest thing to a “state” type tournament for the girls, as girls wrestling is not (yet) sanctioned in Idaho.
Those expected to participate from North Idaho are Alexis Riveria from Coeur d’Alene High, Savannah Kidwell of Lakeland, Hannah Harvey of St. Maries, KJ Johansen from Sandpoint and Prairie Plaster from Bonners Ferry.
This will be the third and final all-girls tournament in Idaho — the others being the Rollie Lane Invitational in Nampa, and the North Idaho Rumble at Coeur d’Alene High.
Timberlake volleyball standout
Dean signs with L-C State
LEWISTON — When Shaun Pohlman signs a volleyball player for his Lewis-Clark State team, he wants more than the on-court skills. He found exactly those qualities in Kenzie Dean, who will join the Warriors this fall as a libero/defensive specialist.
“Over my time as a coach, I have found one thing to be more important than skill, talent, athleticism, etc. — connection,” Pohlman said. “With Kenzie, it has always been a connection before anything else. Aside from the intangibles, we are just fortunate enough to have that connection which also comes with a concrete ability to play the game.”
Dean was a three-time Intermountain League Most Valuable Player, four-time all-league team, four-time all-state selection and a four-year member of the honor roll at Timberlake. She also played for nine years for the Renovators — a club team based in Spokane.
“I’m so excited to embark on this new journey and be a part of such an amazing program,” Dean said. “I chose L-C because I want to be a part of the culture that coach Pohlman is creating both on the court and off. I look forward to the camaraderie within the team in addition to fulfilling my academic goals.”
Her club coach, Kari Chavez, believes Dean will have an immediate impact on the Warrior program.
“Kenzie is probably one of the best ball-control athletes I’ve had in all my years of coaching,” said Chavez, who coached the Renovators to four tournament titles as well as an eighth-place finish in a 112-team tournament during Dean’s playing days. “She takes pride in her serve receive and works hard at getting better each practice. She’s also one of the most mentally tough kids I’ve known.
“She’s had to persevere through some tough times and she’s come out an even stronger young lady than before. I’m so proud of the student-athlete, young lady, and human being she is. She is going to get to LCSC and make an immediate impact on the program.”
