An (un)common win for Lake City
- WRESTLING
COEUR d’ALENE — Once 160 was drawn as the first weight class of the dual, Lake City coach Corey Owen knew his team was going to get out to a good start.
Lake City won eight matches by pin — including five between 170 and 285 pounds — to beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 52-33 on Tuesday afternoon at Lake City High.
“The kids wrestled hard and wrestled really well,” Owen said. “Our strength continues to be the upper end (weights) of the lineup. They’ve been our anchor this year. It was good to draw 160, but I knew we were going to get out to a good start.”
Matthew Whitcomb (170), Zane Monaghan (182), Mahlon Clark (195), Connor Dremann (220), Owen Hughes (285), Caden Hess (106), Devin Sorrelle (120) and Porter Howard (152) won by pin for Lake City.
The match was held at 3 p.m. in the school’s commons area in an effort to draw students following school.
“We’d put the mat out in the commons and had our announcer (Russ Blank) out there playing music to try and draw kids in,” Owen said. “I think it will be something we try to do more often. We’ve got to keep being creative and build on it.”
Lake City, which finished the regular season 16-2 in duals, competes in the 5A Region 1 tournament on Feb. 16 at Lakeland High in Rathdrum.
