James was born Jan. 20, 1924, in Union County, N.C., to Charles and Lillie Belle Loer. He was the third child born to the family that eventually had eight children.
James was raised in the central area of North Carolina and joined the Navy at age 17 to fight in World War II. After serving six years as a distinguished serviceman, he left military life and attended Bible College. He graduated from Holmes Bible College in Greenville, S.C., in May 1951 with the purpose of becoming a minister of the Gospel.
He obtained ministerial license with the Church of God in Cleveland, Tenn., and accepted his first church in Stites, Idaho, which brought he and his young family west.
Over the course of 60-plus years of ministry, he has held pastorates in Sandpoint, Coeur d’Alene and Wallace, Longview and Spokane, Wash., Livingston, Mont., and several other locations in Florida, Illinois, Tennessee and North Carolina.
He returned to Rathdrum in 2016 after enjoying several years of enjoying the snowbird lifestyle by splitting his time between southern Utah and North Idaho.
A birthday celebration was held on Jan. 20, 2019, to celebrate his 95th birthday. He was blessed to be surrounded by five generations of his family; who are pictured here. Many friends and family joined him on this wonderful day.
