Opus 4: A Salute to Veterans concert is Sunday

| November 2, 2018 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Chamber Music Society will continue its practice of paying tribute to those who serve by honoring veterans and their families with an afternoon of free music at 2 p.m. Sunday in Trinity Lutheran Church.

The Opus 4: A Salute to Veterans concert will open with "An Armed Forces Tribute" by CdABrassX5, whose performance will also include: a jazzy version of the Civil War Song, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home;" a collection of songs from early the 1900s, "World War I Medley;" "America the Beautiful;" and will conclude with a moving arrangement of "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

The Flutonics (a flute ensemble) are again with the society and will be performing two pieces: "Dance of the Reed Pipes" and "Prince Rupert’s March." The Flutonics will be followed by trumpet duet with piano accompaniment performing an interesting arrangement of the second and third movements of the Haydn "Trumpet Concerto."

Saxophone quartet Gluteus Saximus returns with three diverse pieces — "Suite Española, Op. 47 - No. 3" by Sevilla Isaac Albeniz, transcribed by Kenneth Abeling; "A Study in Contrasts" by Sammy Nestico; and "The Piggly Wiggle" Edward C. Barroll, arranged by James Boatman.

N.I.T.E. (North Idaho Trumpet Ensemble) will close the concert. The ensemble will open with a fanfare, "Hosting the Dawn." The next two pieces reach into classical literature with pieces from Purcell and Mozart. Following their homage to the classics, N.I.T.E. will perform a beautiful arrangement of "My Country ‘Tis of Thee." The next piece, "Compressionism," explores some interesting colors and technics.

The concerts will conclude with "Salute! An Armed Forces Medley."

The Coeur d’Alene Chamber Music Society was created to give local musicians a chance to perform chamber music, and it fits right into Coeur d'Alene's ever-developing arts identity. The hope is that these concerts will be the beginning of a series of opportunities for musicians to coordinate small ensembles and places to perform.
