Blending fire and spirit

| November 2, 2018 1:00 AM

"It's two brilliant players coming together from different backgrounds, Adam being the flameco guitarist coming with that fire and spirit, and Mak, who is equally full of fire and spirit," said classical guitarist and Spokane Public Radio "Guitar Hour" host Leon Atkinson. "Putting them together and having them blend, that's going to be amazing."

Adam Del Monte, described by Classical Guitar Magazine as "one of the leading flamenco and classical guitarist/composers of his generation," has made it his life's mission to fully express himself in these genres, transcending labels and convention. His music is steeped in tradition while progressive in its openness to musical flavors from around the world.

Mak Grgic — "Gifted. Imaginative. Expressive." as praised my the New York Times — boasts an impressive repertoire that includes music of the baroque and renaissance to music of a cinematic nature, ethnic music of his native Balkan Peninsula and extreme avant-garde and microtonal music.

Both musicians have extensive resumes of accolades, accomplishments, acclaim and international experience that they'll bring with them as they perform together and individually for the first in the three-part 2018-2019 Friends of the Guitar Hour concert series.

Grgic and del Monte will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 at Holy Names Music Center, 3910 W. Custer Drive, Spokane.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3089621 for $38 each. Season tickets are $100 each.

Friends of the Guitar Hour received nonprofit status in March and is actively seeking underwriters and sponsors.

The concert series will continue with Jacklin Arts and Cultural Center Post Falls performances of Larry Almeida on Jan. 11 and Chaconne Klaverenga on April 12.
