State rep discloses his finances

I believe the public has a vested interest in understanding the potential financial conflicts of interest of their elected officials. Although the Idaho Legislature has a rule that requires all members disclose potential conflicts of interest when voting on legislation, advanced transparency can only benefit the public’s understanding of their elected officials’ decision making.

Idaho is one of only two states in the country that do not require any public disclosure of assets or income for elected officials. A legislative committee in Idaho recently rejected a proposed bill that would have required all candidates for elective office at the state, legislative, county, or city level to file annual disclosures, identify their primary employer and occupation or job title; all entities they own or for which they’re an officer; each entity that has paid them $5,000 or more in income in the past year; each entity in which they own stocks or bonds valued at more than $5,000, unless they’re managed by a third party; any boards on which they serve; and their spouse’s name, occupation and employer.

Although I am not required by Idaho law to disclose this information, I believe that transparency will only help build a better, more representative, and accountable government. This information was taken from my most recently completed tax forms:
