Cd'A Charter, Timberlake girls clinch state berths

RATHDRUM — Sarah Hines scored twice and Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy did not allow a shot on goal as the Panthers beat the Bonners Ferry Badgers 5-0 in a semifinal game of the 3A District 1-2 girls soccer tournament Tuesday at Sunrise Rotary Fields.
The win clinches a berth to state for Coeur d’Alene Charter, the defending state champions. The Panthers will play Timberlake, which also secured a berth to state on Tuesday, in the championship game Thursday at 4 p.m. at Sunrise Rotary Fields.
“Tonight was about doing a job to finish the season another step toward our overall goal,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Although it wasn’t pretty at times, I was happy to see a determined mindset by every player who took the field for us. We did our job. We also had the opportunity to try out a few different lineup combinations in the second half and I was also able to rest some players to get them fresh legs for Thursday. Bonners Ferry presented a tough physical match throughout the entire game, but all in all it was another good day for the Lady Panthers.”
Bonners Ferry finished 5-10.

RATHDRUM — The Tigers pulled away with two goals in the final five minutes to beat the Lumberjacks in a 3A District 1-2 semifinal match at Sunrise Rotary Fields.
“It was a very evenly played match for the first 30 minutes,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “St. Maries made some adjustments and scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half. They played really well tonight. It was a good game for both teams to play.”
Scoring was not available.
Timberlake (12-3-1) will face Coeur d’Alene Charter in the championship match on Thursday.
St. Maries finishes 9-5-1.

MOSCOW — The host and No. 2-seeded Bears scored the game’s only goal in the second half to beat the No. 3 seed Hawks in a loser-out first round of the 4A Region 1 tournament.
Moscow plays at top-seeded Sandpoint on Thursday in the championship game for the region’s lone berth to state.
Lakeland finishes 3-10-1.

RATHDRUM — A win is a win, no matter if it’s ugly or a close call.
Tuesday’s semifinal was a little on the unpretty side for Intermountain League champion Timberlake.
Lucas Hiertz scored in the fifth minute and the Tigers took advantage of an own goal, then had to hold on late to beat the Bulldogs in a 3A District 1-2 semifinal match at Sunrise Rotary Fields.
“We did not play well, in the first or second half,” Timberlake coach Bert Bentley said. “We had plenty of shots on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net. We just did not do what I felt we should have.”
Timberlake (11-3-1) beat Grangeville 4-1 last Saturday in the regular season finale for both schools. The Tigers advance to the championship match on Thursday against Bonners Ferry, which beat St. Maries 2-0 in the other semifinal on Tuesday.
