Brandt helps Lakeland whip Moscow in 4A IEL opener

RATHDRUM — Josh Brandt scored three touchdowns for the Lakeland Hawks in a 37-14 win over the Moscow Bears in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both at Corbit Field on Friday.

Lakeland (3-4) travels to Sandpoint next Friday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Wolfgang Beier had 17 carries for 165 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats beat the Tigers for first time since 2001, in the Intermountain League opener for both schools at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field.

Chase Gardom caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Joseph Follini to cut the deficit to 16-14 for Timberlake, but Kellogg scored the final 16 points to pull away.

It was Timberlake’s first IML loss since 2008, when the Tigers fell to Orofino at home.

Timberlake (0-6) travels to Bonners Ferry next Friday.

Kellogg (4-2) hosts Priest River next Friday.

ST. MARIES — Zack Renfrew ran for 136 yards and a touchdown for the Lumberjacks, but a touchdown and two-point conversion in the second overtime gave the Bulldogs the win in the Central Idaho League opener for both schools.

Grangeville quarterback Tesher Harris tied the game at 14-all in the fourth quarter on a 40-yard touchdown pass.

After a Grangeville touchdown to open overtime, St. Maries quarterback Kaden Hammond scored a touchdown on a 5-yard run, then scored the go-ahead touchdown from a yard out to give St. Maries a 29-22 lead before Grangeville’s attempt for two points on its final possession was successful to end the game.

St. Maries (4-3) travels to Orofino on Oct. 20.

Grangeville is 5-2.

BONNERS FERRY — Janna Oelke and Bethan Suchoski combined for three goals and an assist in the second half as St. Maries rallied for a road victory in Bonners Ferry.

“It was an evenly-played first half,” Lumberjacks coach Brad Groce said. “In the second half, we passed the ball much better and created some opportunities.”

Friday’s win completed an impressive turnaround from the 2016 season, when St. Maries finished 1-12-2. This year, the Lumberjacks are 8-4-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the Intermountain League, good for third place behind state-level 3A powers Coeur d’Alene Charter and Timberlake.

St. Maries opens district play Monday, facing Kellogg at Lakeland High School.
