Massage cupping
The modern world of healing has embraced another wonderful ancient technique that has powerful results. Massage cupping bodywork is being used for many purposes, including helping with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.
Cupping consists of placing glass or plastic cups on the body and creating a negative pressure (suction) on the skin's surface. The cups can be stationary or used in a gliding motion. One of the benefits of a moving cup is that bony landmarks such as the spine and scapula which are often avoided (because typical massage compression would cause pain), can be worked on.
Massage cupping therapy is used to soften tight muscles and tone attachments, loosen adhesions and lift connective tissue, bring hydration and blood flow to body tissues, and drain excess fluids and toxins by opening lymphatic pathways. Massage cupping bodywork is versatile and can easily be modified to accomplish a range of techniques, from lymphatic drainage to deep tissue release.
This complements many health modalities including deep tissue massage. The suction created by the cups usually leaves marks on the skin because it is pulling toxins, pathogenic factors, dead lymph and cellular debris from deep within tissues to the surface. Massage cupping marks are an indication of existing disease and toxins being removed from these tissues. The toxic agents are then more easily expelled from the body by the circulatory and lymphatic systems. These marks dissipate from a few hours to several weeks, depending on the concentration of toxins in the tissue. Usually, the greatest amount of deposits being drawn to the surface will occur in the first few treatments. The marks will lessen in intensity as the deeper issues are resolved.
Although the marks may look painful, they are not. There is usually an immediate sense of relief following the therapy.
If there is no restriction, pathogen, blockage in lymph or blood circulation in the tissue, marks on the skin will appear light pink, which indicates normal healthy blood flow to the dermis. These marks disappear a few minutes after the treatment.
Conditions that respond to Massage Cupping therapy include colon disorders, edema, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, cellulite, and nervous tension, just to name a few. To achieve maximum results safely, training is required. When scheduling a treatment, look for a Certified Massage Cupping Practitioner (CMCP).
