Panhandle Symphony offers free concert Tuesday

| November 25, 2016 8:00 PM

Panhandle Symphony Orchestra will perform its Fall Concert next week in Coeur d’Alene.

The free performance will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in the Salvation Army Kroc Center theater, 1765 W. Golf Course Road.

Director Tim Sandford has recognized some requests for certain music in selecting which pieces will be performed.

The opening for the concert will be “American Salute” by Morton Gould. Based on “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” the piece is brisk and challenging for the orchestra.

Beginning with some very recognizable strains from the oboe, played by Rachel Noriega, another selection will bring concert-goers back to the days of Sunday school and will be familiar to many of the children.

From the motion picture “How to Train your Dragon” comes a lively piece by John Powell. To fill the request for something by George Gershwin, Sandford has selected the ever popular “An American In Paris” Suite. The Christmas season will be recognized in music as well, and audience members are welcome to sing along.

Panhandle Symphony Orchestra has deep roots in the Coeur d’Alene musical community. It was originally formed in 2006 as the Fort Sherman Symphonette. The founding members formerly played together in other local musical groups. The orchestra was officially renamed in October 2009, and in 2010, the Panhandle Symphony Orchestra received its public charity status.

As with all Panhandle Symphony Orchestra concerts, admission is free, but as an all-volunteer group, the orchestra appreciates donations to help meet costs.

The orchestra’s spring concert is scheduled for May 9, 2017.
