COEUR d’ALENE — The North Idaho College wrestling team got a big pin from Thomas Stevenson at 149 pounds, then another by Jeremy Merryweather at 197, helping the Cardinals claim a 25-19 dual victory over the visiting Montana State-Northern Lights at Christianson Gym on Saturday.

Stevenson pinned Drake Randall — the Lewiston High product — in 4 minutes, 16 seconds, then clinched the dual on a pin by Merryweather in 5:39.

“Thomas’ win was huge for us,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “Randall is a tough kid and Thomas just caught him and that was the difference in the match. Jeremy’s match was great up until the end and he got him tired and was able to get the pin.”

Former Coeur d’Alene High standout Dylan Lockwood beat Thunder Morales by a 12-3 major decision for Montana State-Northern, who also picked up a win from former NIC heavyweight Taylor Kornoely, who beat Cooper Thomas 4-2 at 285 pounds.

“It was a 1-0 match until the last 20 seconds,” Whitcomb said. “He (Kornoely) beat him by 17 points in the first match of the year (on Oct. 29 in Havre, Mont.), and Cooper has to take some confidence in that.”

NIC will compete in the Spokane Open today starting at 9 a.m. at the Spokane Convention Center. Finals are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

A scheduled dual against Great Falls was not wrestled due to a shortage of Argo wrestlers, with the teams scrimmaging instead.

PORTLAND — Markus Golder’s basket evened the score at 70-all late in the second half and the Cardinals put the game away from the free-throw line, beating their former Scenic West Athletic Conference foe Badgers in the championship game of the Portland Tip Off Classic at Portland Community College.

“It was a battle and a real dogfight,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “It was good for our guys to face some adversity and battle to get the win.”

Golder finished with 15 points and Sam Dowd had 21 points and eight assists for NIC (2-0), which hosts Pierce College on Dec. 2 to open the Bigfoot/Cardinal Classic at Rolly Williams Court.

“Markus has been our leader scoring-wise, but got into some foul trouble early in the first half,” Symons said. “He picked up two fouls and it put a bit of pressure on Sam. We got a huge spark off the bench from Tyus (Hosley, who scored all eight of his points in the first half) when we were a little undermanned. We led by seven at halftime, and that was big for us.”

Nate Bruneel scored 22 points for Snow (1-1).
