Oswald Zimmerman, 89

Oswald “Ozzie/Oz” Zimmerman, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away Nov. 5, 2016, at Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene. He was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Eldred, Minn., the son of Jacob and Katharina (Seiler) Zimmerman. The family moved from Minnesota to Rathdrum, Idaho, in the 1930s.

Ozzie joined the Navy, on July 31, 1945, and was honorably discharged Aug. 20, 1946. Following his service to his country, he returned to Rathdrum and worked in the timber industry until his retirement in 1989.

Ozzie met Peggy Arlene (Papalaw) Riggs in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and they were married on March 23, 1954 in Superior, Mont.

He loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing and camping. He and Peggy were also very involved in the local bowling leagues for many years. He enjoyed horse racing and made many friends at the Greyhound race track.

You could see him on his daily walks around The Coeur d’Alene Resort boardwalk and Tubbs Hill.

He is survived by his son, Lee Edward Zimmerman; daughter-in-law Roxanne Zimmerman of Hayden Lake; stepdaughter Penny (Riggs-Zimmerman) Davis of Coeur d’Alene; son-in-law Jeff Davis; six grandchildren, Darik, Jeremy and Chris Riggs, Shannon (Riggs) Johnston, Jeff Clem and Lauri Goecke; many great-grandchildren, nieces and a nephew also survive; as well as, long time friend and companion, Molly Hughes of Spokane, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy; stepson Michael J. Riggs; his father and mother; brothers John, Jack, Emanuel, Emil, Ed, William and Sam Zimmerman; and sisters Clara Todahl and Betty Swedman.

Per Ozzie’s request, there will be no funeral services. However, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of North Idaho.
