NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinal men romp in season opener

• MEN’S BASKETBALL

PORTLAND — Redshirt freshman Markus Golder scored 28 points and Niko Bevens added 16 points and six rebounds to lead North Idaho College past Portland 87-79 in the opening round of the Portland Community College tournament on Friday night.

It was the season opener for NIC, who moved from the NJCAA’s Scenic West Athletic Conference to the regionally-based Northwest Athletic Conference at the end of last season.

Sam Dowd had 10 assists and Jordan Henderson had 10 points and eight rebounds for NIC (1-0), which faces Snow College in the championship game tonight at 6.

MESA, Ariz. — Cierra Dvorak and Gia Sorn scored 11 points each for the Cardinals in a loss to the Apaches in the Mesa tournament.

Shanna Florchinger had eight points and Shayna Allert had seven rebounds for NIC in its season opener. The Cardinals will face tournament host Mesa tonight.

Tatyana McFarland had 14 points for Cochise (3-0) of Douglas, Ariz.

COEUR d’ALENE — The 11th-ranked Cougars won the first two matches of the night by pin to beat the Cardinals in a dual at Christianson Gym.

Bryson Beard (141 pounds), Trey Meyer (165) and Cooper Thomas picked up decisions for NIC, which hosts the annual Cardinal Duals today starting at noon. NIC will wrestle Great Falls starting at noon, then wrestle Montana State-Northern following the first dual. Simon Fraser will face Montana State-Northern and Great Falls, starting at noon.

Cardinals drop two, bow out of NWAC tourney

TACOMA — North Idaho lost to Linn-Benton and Bellevue and was eliminated from the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament with a 1-2 showing at The Greater Tacoma Trade and Convention Center.

NIC finishes 20-13 in its first season in the conference after moving from the NJCAA’s Scenic West Athletic Conference at the start of the season.

Julie Staffler had 14 kills and 10 digs and Halle Hess 15 digs for NIC in a 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 loss to Linn-Benton (41-0) of Albany, Ore., in a quarterfinal match.

Brooke Bell had 10 kills and former Lake City High standout Brittany Gay had 30 assists and 11 digs for NIC.

Chase Bohman had 14 kills and Montanna Gubrud had 30 assists and seven digs for Linn-Benton, which lost to Chemeketa in the quarterfinals.

Brooke Bell had eight kills for the Cardinals in a 20-25, 25-10, 15-10 loss to Bellevue in a loser-out match.

Gay had 22 assists and Zuri Meehan had 13 digs for NIC.

Bellevue (36-9) advances to face Blue Mountain in a loser-out match today.
