NIC WRESTLING: Cardinals roll at Highline
DES MOINES, Wash. — Thomas Stevenson (149 pounds), Trey Meyer (165), Levi Perry (184) and Jeremy Merryweather (197) each won matches by major decision for the North Idaho College wrestling team in a 33-3 win against Highline Community College on Thursday night.
“We’re obviously pleased with that score,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “With the guys traveling again, they came out and wrestled a lot better than last week (a 25-16 loss at Montana State-Northern in Havre to open the season last Saturday). They got here, made weight and each of them came out and wrestled hard for seven minutes. Each of them did a good job.”
Meyer beat Hunter Ferguson of Highline 17-4. Meyer pinned Ferguson at the Washington state high school finals last year.
“Trey just came out and got after the guy and stepped it up a notch,” Whitcomb said. “Just with how intense he was, he had a point to prove and the guys followed suit.”
Garrett White (125) won by technical fall for NIC, which travels to NAIA Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia, tonight. Former NIC wrestler Tyler McLean is a senior at Simon Fraser.
