Florence E. Herby, 93

Florence Elizabeth (Hannon) Herby passed away peacefully May 17, 2016, surrounded by her loving family at Hospice House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Florence was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Fairmont, N.D., the fourth child of eight born to James and Anna (Lennon) Hannon. After graduating high school in Waubun, Minn., Florence attended Business College. In 1943, she enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a yeoman for the duration of World War ll. After her honorable discharge, Florence returned to Waubun, where she met her future husband, Herman Herby, who was also a returning veteran. Herman and Florence were married on June 19, 1947, in Waubun.

Florence was a wonderful homemaker and mother, raising six children. The family moved from Hopkins, Minn., to Coeur d’Alene in 1968. Florence enjoyed league bowling for many years and was a devoted fan of the Seattle Mariners. Her faith in God was strong, and she has been a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. Florence was renowned for her skill at getting information from people and her interest in the lives of her family. Her memory for details and dates amazed all who knew her. Florence and her late husband enjoyed Alaskan cruises and trips to Hawaii, as well as many family reunions.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Herby in 2006 and her oldest son, Jim Herby in 2015. Also preceding her in death were sisters, Kitty Johnson, Alice Pollock, Helen Gannon and Eileen Roth; and brothers James Hannon and Daniel Hannon. She is survived by daughter Mary (David) Ballard; son Bruce (Dortha) Herby; daughter Peggy (Mike) Sawicki; son Chris (Ginnie) Herby; daughter Carol Herby; daughter-in-law Rita Herby; brother Terry Hannon; sister-in-law Charlet Hannon; sister-in-law Evy (Wally) Wermager; brother-in-law Pete (Jane) Herby; grandchildren Jim (Pam) Herby, Connie (John) Young, Molly (Chris) Hale, Adam Herby, Diane (Richard) Harbour, Janelle Davies, David Sawicki, David (Kristen) Herby, Chayna Herby, Nick Covarrubias and Cameron Covarrubias; as well as 12 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and many “favorite” nieces and nephews.

At Florence’s request, donations to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835, would be greatly appreciated.
