Chess tournament today at Canfield Middle School

Canfield Middle School in Coeur d'Alene will host the Cougar Challenge Scholastic Chess Tournament at 10 a.m. today.

The tournament, sponsored by the Inland Northwest Chess Academy, is open to all K-12 students in the Inland Northwest and trophies will be awarded to the top players and top school club team.

The format for the tournament is "five round Swiss," meaning it is a non-elimination format — students play all five games.

Divisions are decided by the tournament director, John Dill, based on students registration information and result are rated by the Northwest Scholastic Rating Service.

Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. and registration ends at 9:30 a.m. Registration is $10. Preregistered students who arrive after 9:40 a.m. will not play the first round of the tournament.

The tournament will officially begin at 10 a.m. and the awards will finish around 4 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Canfield Middle School is located at 1800 E. Dalton Ave. in Coeur d'Alene.
