COEUR d’ALENE — A Coeur d’Alene man was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly stealing a car, crashing it nearby, and fleeing from police.

Devan Michael Humphreys, 21, was charged with robbery, DUI, driving without privileges and leaving the scene of a crash, Coeur d’Alene Police reported.

Officers responded to the Zip Trip gas station at 15th Street and Best Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a vehicle theft.

A 20-year-old woman told officers she left her vehicle running while she briefly went into the gas station. When the woman returned to her car, Humphreys was allegedly sitting in the driver’s seat, police reported.

The woman opened the driver’s door and attempted to talk Humphreys out of the car, police reported, but after a brief struggle, Humphreys kicked the woman in the face and drove away in her car.

Shortly after leaving the gas station, Humphreys crashed the woman’s car in the 1300 block of East Gilbert Avenue and then fled on foot, police reported.

Coeur d’Alene police officers set up a perimeter in the area and a K9 team was called to help find Humphreys. Police searched several residences and located Humphreys in the 1400 block of East Lunceford Avenue. Humphreys was taken into custody without further incident.

The woman was transported to Kootenai Health by medical personnel where she was treated and released for minor injuries.
