Golf tourney helps Inland NW Food Network
The Inland Northwest Food Network would like to extend our deepest thanks to Bay Shore Systems and all those who contributed to the 19th annual Bay Shore Systems Charity Golf Tournament held at the Prairie Falls Golf Club in Post Falls. The Inland NW Food Network was chosen to be the designated charity for this year’s event. Two hundred businesses and individuals participated in the tournament that raised $12,884 in support of our work. The funds will be used to support our programs and continued growth.
The Inland NW Food Network connects people, place, food and farms through education and outreach. Our vision is a community-based food system that celebrates the cultural aspects of our region’s food and promotes health for individuals, the local economy, and the environment.
The volunteer-based organization was founded in 2014 by Teri McKenzie, who now serves as the executive director. In addition to regular educational programs and workshops that address a broad range of topics related to food and farming, the group offers monthly hands-on cooking classes that emphasize the importance of eating seasonally and locally. Our Local Lending Program connects farmers and food entrepreneurs to lenders who provide peer-to-peer, low-interest loans in support of growing our local food system.

Playground for all is in full swing!
Oh, wow! It’s actually happening! What started out as an EXCEL grant has turned into Fernan’s Playground for All. A group of passionate and committed 10- and 11-year-old students continue to be the driving force behind the project. Their enthusiasm has sparked an equally passionate and committed adult community of parents, volunteers and donors that have ensured the playground will be built. As the finish line approaches, $68,000 of the $75,000 needed has been raised. Donations are still being accepted. Checks can be made out to FERNAN STEM ACADEMY PTA with reference to Playground for All and mailed to 520 N. 21st St., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.
The Fernan fifth grade ALP students have toured the site as it is developing and continue to be amazed by the scope of their dreams. Cameron stated, “I can’t believe we have gotten this far. I feel so good about our class; we are almost there! I thought it was impossible to accomplish something at such a young age but I stand corrected.” “I’m so happy that the pathway is coming to life,” said Nate. Zach agreed, “I can’t believe we’re almost finished!” Paden and Jasmine both acknowledged the generosity of the community. “We’re thankful that the community donated to our project,” they commented. “Can a 10-year-old create a huge wheelchair accessible pathway with pullouts?” asked Eddie. No, we needed your help, your time. Thank you everyone out of my heart.” As Daisy summed it up, “I have truly loved this school from the very beginning and never wanted to be one of those kids that are simply forgotten. Well, now I have made my lasting mark on Fernan. I will never forget this because the playground will be more accessible to all, especially to those with different abilities.”
Mrs. Kiefer, their ALP teacher, shared the same thoughts. “I am so proud of these remarkable children. I am equally proud of the community for stepping up with their time, energy and donations. Together, we are going to make this playground a reality. We are close to realizing our dream, please help us with the last $7,000 remaining for this great, great ‘PLAYGROUND FOR ALL.’ Thank you for your continued support!”
