Former Washington State, Seattle Mariner pitcher Ramsay passes away
Robert Ramsay, 42, who played eight years of professional baseball, including two with the Seattle Mariners, passed away on Aug. 4, MLB.com columnist Anthony Castrovince reported.
After retiring from baseball, he taught secondary education for three years and earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Idaho.
He was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2002, ending his career, but he went on to teach and was an assistant baseball coach at Coeur d’Alene and Lake City High.
The last four years, he has been a stay at home father, enjoying time with his sons and supporting his wife, Samantha, a former Coeur d’Alene High volleyball player who continued her career at Penn State and Washington State. She is currently an assistant professor at the University of Idaho.
He is survived by his wife, and two sons at the family home in Moscow; his parents and his brother, Matthew.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow at 11 a.m.
Former NFL player, Ferris High grad Yarno passes away from cancer
George Yarno Sr., an offensive guard who played in the NFL for 10 seasons after graduating from Washington State in 1979, passed away on Monday after a lengthly battle with stomach cancer.
He was 58.
Yarno was the offensive line coach at Washington State from 1991-94, then was offensive coordinator at Idaho from 1995-97. He returned to Washington State as offensive line coach from 2003-07 before moving onto the NFL with Tampa Bay, Detroit and Jacksonville, where he finished his career in 2014.
His son, George Jr., was named the head football coach at Sandpoint earlier this year.
