COEUR d’ALENE — “The boys just played phenominally well,” was how St. Maries boys soccer Chris Renaldo summed up Tuesday’s stunner.

St. Maries junior centerback Steven Davenport scored two goals in regulation and another in a shootout, leading the fourth-seeded Lumberjacks past the top-seeded Timberlake Tigers 3-2 in a semifinal match in the 3A District 1-2 tournament on Tuesday at Community United Methodist Church Field.

“The kids just caught fire and decided they were going to play a great match,” Renaldo said. “We went down a goal quick in the second half, came back and just held on. The boys just played phenomenally well. Timberlake’s a great team. They played well in their first game at districts, and continued to play well in the second game of districts. It was a close, back and forth game.”

Timberlake lost leading goal scorer Cody Bentley at the end of the first half after a collision with the St. Maries goalkeeper. He did not return to the match.

“That hurt them a lot,” said Renaldo of Bentley. “He’s a whale of a player. It was a breakaway one-on-one and our keeper just ended on top of the ball.”

St. Maries plays either Priest River or Bonners Ferry in the district title match Thursday at 3 p.m. at Community United Methodist Church Field in Coeur d’Alene.

Timberlake beat St. Maries 6-0 and 4-0 in Intermountain League play this season.

Hauck, who also scored in regulation, and Denton Meijerink scored in the shootout for Timberlake, which finishes 11-6.
