COEUR d’ALENE — For a time, it seemed as if Post Falls senior Max McCullough couldn’t miss on Tuesday night.

Then his teammates got rolling and they couldn’t miss.

By the time the buzzer had sounded, the Trojans had outscored the South Kitsap Wolves 59-26 in the final three quarters of an 82-44 win in the Lake City Invitational.

“We’ve been playing some really good teams in the last five to six games,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “In practice today, we said that we needed to keep believing in our shooters. (On Monday), we had some great looks, but they just didn’t go in. We had confidence and all of a sudden we get some confidence and it starts rolling.”

Post Falls went 1-2 in the Curtis Holiday Classic, then fell to Kentwood on Monday.

“We’ve been tested, and it’s done what we wanted it to do,” McLean said. “It’s exposed some of our weaknesses and we’ve worked on them. We’re pretty good at some things, but if we can keep improving, we should be pretty good by the end of the season. Once we get to league, hopefully we’ll have some things in order.”

McCullough scored a game-high 31 points as the Trojans shot 11 of 21 from beyond the 3-point line.

“Thought Max, when they went to the box and 1 — which we were prepared for — a lot of high school kids will force the issue,” McLean said. “Max is the epitome of what we preach in our program and went out and drew their defense and it allowed other guys to get loose. He accepted it and let the guys come to him and it allowed his teammates to get going. I’m very proud of a kid that does his job and if they’re going to allow them to do this, he didn’t force the issue. I was proud of his effort and this won’t be the only time we see this.”

Eric Wattree scored 22 points for South Kitsap, which beat Sandpoint on Monday.

Kentwood 65, Lake City 39: Kenny Louie-McGee scored 13 points for the Timberwolves, who trailed 45-36 after the third quarter.

“Executed what we wanted to do,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “We’re just trying to get the kids get things done right for four quarters. The inexperience thing is beyond us now and we’ve played seven games. You’ve got to finish and they wound up wearing us down. We got a lot out of it, but moral victories are only going to get you so far.”

James Carlson scored 12 points for Lake City (2-5), which concludes the tournament today at noon against Mountain Home.

“We just broke down on a couple things and it went from a four point hole to 18 quickly,” Winger said. “And you’re fighting and trying to gamble, and it’s like trying to run uphill against a team like that, especially with some sophomores about that. We’re proud of the effort and with what they did for three quarters, but we’ve got to get through four quarters.
