Volunteers wanted for tax prep program

It's that taxing time of year again.

AARP's Tax-Aide program is seeking volunteers to assist in offering free tax preparation to residents of Kootenai and Shoshone counties.

Five-year volunteer Betsy Bethke said there is no need to have prior experience in doing taxes because full training is provided and help is always available. Even those who are not good with computers or math are encouraged to volunteer.

"It is the most rewarding experience," Bethke said. We meet the nicest people and it's a joy to give back to our community."

Tax-Aide is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and the AARP Foundation. The program assists low- to moderate-income taxpayers with the preparation of their tax returns at no cost.

Warren Fisher, who oversees the training of the volunteers, said there may have been close to 80 volunteers last year.

"If we could get 80 this year we'd be happy," Fisher said. "I've been trying to get up to 100 for years."

Bethke said Fisher and his wife, Deb, are great people to work with and are extremely knowledgeable.

"Everyone feels like they are participating and doing a great job because of their training," Bethke said.

She said training starts Jan. 4, and volunteers train three days a week for two weeks, and then are only asked to work one shift for the season — though they can work as many shifts as they would like.
