TOWER: Build on east Sherman
Mr. Hagadone’s proposed new hotel tower is honestly not as ugly as many of the critics make it out to be. Truth is that it is simply out of place. The current downtown hotel is beautiful and castle-like, as if out of a fairy tale. It’s an expensive resort that realistically doesn’t lend itself to conventions and conferences. Convention goers aren’t looking to spend several hundreds of dollars per night for a hotel room.
My suggestion to Mr. Hagadone would be to keep the current tower design, with just a few tweaks, and instead build it further down Sherman Avenue nearer to his golf course. This new construction could help kick start the East Sherman redevelopment project, as well as create a new separate less upscale resort more suited to the conventions Mr. Hagadone envisions.
As far as the tower design just make a few simple tweaks such as stepping it down at both ends and redoing the backside to look less like a Soviet-era government building. This new plan would make downtown less cluttered, keep the beautiful picturesque views, stretch the skyline out a bit along Sherman, and most importantly really truly help Mr. Hagadone achieve his overall goal and expand his business. As an area resident who doesn’t mind new development and actually welcomes it as long it’s aesthetically and socially responsible, this is just my opinion.
