PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Schoening, Kirscher pace Sandpoint girls

| December 20, 2015 8:00 PM

SPOKANE — Madi Schoening had a strong all-around game, netting 23 points, including 4 of 8 from beyond the arc, to go with seven steals, six boards and three assists, leading Sandpoint to a 54-39 win over West Valley (2-5) in nonleague play Saturday.

Grace Kirscher added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists, Riley Couch hit two 3-pointers, and Grace Hicks blocked three shots for the Bulldogs (5-7), who led 32-9 after a dominating first half, showing no effects of the Moose Madness spirit game vs. Bonners Ferry from the night before.

“Grace hit some shots right at the beginning and that got things rolling. The big two were working well offensively,” said Sandpoint assistant Will Love, who said the press caused West Valley problems. “The team is starting to play basketball on both ends. They’re getting comfortable with each other, and they’re having fun.”

Sandpoint faces Enumclaw in the opener of the Coeur d’Alene Tournament on Dec. 28.

“They (the Knights) went with a full-court press and half-court traps,” Grant said, “and we only had 16 turnovers against pressure all night. I am really happy with the way our backcourt is taking care of the basketball.”
