PREP ROUNDUP: Vikings top Hawks in nonleague dual

COEUR d’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene High senior Nate Jensen pinned Lakeland’s Lucas Gardner at heavyweight, helping the Vikings beat the Hawks 42-36 in a nonleague dual at Coeur d’Alene High.

“We were down 21-3, but just kept battling,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We got some big wins and just found a way to pull it out. We’ve got so many younger kids in the lighter weights, and we’re making young mistakes. Overall, it was a good team effort. We like where we’re headed. By the end of the year, we’ll be a decent team. Lakeland’s a talented team and it a was a great dual.”

William Edelblute (113), Tavis Woempner (120), Brian Edelblute (120), Larry Johnson (132) and Jared Walker (195) finished unbeaten on the night for Lakeland, which beat Lake City earlier on the night.

“It came down to the last match of the night, the kids wrestled tough,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “I’m happy with the kids with working, but we’re still pretty young. Their guy pinned Lucas Gardner at 285 pounds. We gave up some weight in some matches. But it was a good match, both teams wrestled tough.”

Coeur d’Alene also beat Kellogg 71-6.

Andrew Olvera (170) and Rusty Dan (220) went unbeaten for Lake City, which beat Kellogg 54-23 after falling to Lakeland 53-27.

“Andrew had a really great night,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “He had a tough weekend and bounced back and had a great night tonight. Rusty did a great job winning his first two varsity matches of the year.”

All four teams will compete in the annual Tri-State Invitational starting Friday at North Idaho College.
