PREP ROUNDUP: Timberlake girls finish strong to top Sandpoint

| December 16, 2015 8:00 PM

• GIRLS BASKETBALL

SANDPOINT — Keelie Lawler scored 12 points, Lilly Kelley added 10, Alison Kirby made 7 of 8 free throws and Shelby Starr tallied eight points, three rebounds and three assists as the 3A Timberlake Tigers beat the 4A Sandpoint Bulldogs 58-50 on Tuesday night.

Timberlake (6-1) made 20 of 29 free throws, many in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs were forced to foul.

Sandpoint was just 4 of 6 from the stripe.

“We just battled in the second half, blocking out and going after rebounds,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, who felt his team’s full court pressure all game wore the Bulldogs down. “We pressed the whole game, played 10 bodies. I think the fatigue wore them down, and they had a lot of turnovers late in the game.”

Madi Schoening had 16 points, 12 rebounds and three steals for Sandpoint (3-7), Grace Kirscher added 13 points and three steals and Riley Couch made 4 of 6 from beyond the arc for most of her 16 points.

Couch capped a run of five straight points with a slick baseline reverse layin to stake her team to a 40-38 lead early in the fourth quarter, but it was all Timberlake from there, starting with nine straight points to build a lead.

“We didn’t compete very well on the boards,” Sandpoint coach Duane Ward said. “Timberlake is a good ball club, and they were more aggressive.”

POST FALLS — The Trojans went down right off the bat against Chiawana of Pasco, Wash., in the first quarter, falling behind 19-6 and never truly recovered in a nonleague loss at The Arena.

“Basically the game was eight to 12 points most of the time after that first quarter,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “I think we went eight straight possessions without a shot in the first quarter. They hit a couple 3s in that same time, got that lead and it just stayed that way the whole way.”

Braydey Hodgins of Chiawana, a senior guard who recently signed to play basketball with Boise State, scored 26 points.

“They’re pretty much all guards,” Allert said. “Their main player (Hodgins) drives, gets the shot for herself or sets up other players. She’s a tough matchup.”

Melody Kempton scored 22 points to go with 18 rebounds for Post Falls (5-2).

Post Falls plays at Eagle on Thursday in the first round of the Timberlion tournament.

“We broke away a little in the third quarter,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “NICS gave us a good game, they made us work for it. Lillian, Jordyn and Cailyn had good games offensively. The whole team did well defensively, I’m real pleased. We struggled from the free throw line, we were 5 for 23. We need to work on that.”

Symons and Elijah Schreibeis had six rebounds each for Genesis Prep.
