Cougars announce 2016
football schedule
PULLMAN — The Pac-12 Conference has released its 2016 football schedule and Washington State will host seven games in Martin Stadium, highlighted by conference opponents, Oregon, UCLA and concluding with the Apple Cup against Washington.
For the first time since 1999, the Cougars will play seven home games in Martin Stadium.
The Cougars open their 2016 schedule Saturday, Sept. 3 against Eastern Washington, an opponent they defeated 24-20 in 2012, the first home game under head coach Mike Leach. The following week, Sept. 10, WSU travels to Boise State for a matchup against the Broncos. WSU is 4-0 against the Broncos all-time, including a 41-20 win in Boise in 2001, the last time the teams met. The Cougars close out the nonconference schedule Sept. 17 against Idaho in Martin Stadium. The Cougars posted a 42-0 victory over the Vandals in 2013 and own an all-time record of 71-17-3 over Idaho.
Following their lone bye week of the season, the Cougars open Pac-12 Conference play against Oregon, Oct. 1. WSU snapped an eight-game skid against the Ducks earlier this year with a come-from-behind, 45-38 double-overtime victory in Eugene. WSU then travels to Stanford for an Oct. 8 matchup at the defending Pac-12 champions.
The Cougars will host UCLA for the first time since the 2012 season when the Bruins come to Pullman for an Oct. 15 contest. WSU used some last-minute heroics from Luke Falk and Gabe Marks last month when they rallied for a 31-27 win at UCLA. WSU then hits the road for back-to-back games at Arizona State (Oct. 22) and Oregon State (Oct. 29).
Arizona returns to Pullman Nov. 5 for a Pac-12 contest. The Cougars remain in Pullman the following week as they host California (Nov. 12) in Martin Stadium. The 2016 road schedule concludes in Boulder as the Cougars face Colorado Nov. 19. The last time WSU traveled to Boulder, the Cougars escaped with a 31-27 win in the closing minutes, the 500th victory in Cougar football history.
WSU concludes its 2016 regular season by hosting Washington in the Apple Cup, Friday, Nov. 25, in Martin Stadium. The contest marks the lone non-Saturday game on the schedule.

BOISE — Five Idaho high school juniors were named as the 2015 fall recipients of the Interscholastic Star Student Recognition Awards.
The awards are presented biannually by the Idaho High School Activities Association and its state championships sponsor, The United Dairymen of Idaho.
Chase Blazzard (Troy), Brogun Tibbetts (Salmon), Brooke Mason (Filer), Hannah Webster (Caldwell) and Timberlyn Short (Post Falls) were selected from a field of students nominated by their school principals.
Other finalists were Kamm Mangum (Clearwater Valley), Casey Tighe (Orofino), RaAnna Dahle (Fruitland), Luke Lamey (Bishop Kelly) and Grace Crookham-Guy (Boise).
Nominees for the scholarships are exemplary students who participate in IHSAA-sponsored sports and activities. Each application includes an essay, recommendations from school administrators, description of athletic and activity participation, and service to school and community.
Interscholastic Stars will receive a $2000 scholarship to the college of his/her choice. The IHSAA, with the support of the United Dairymen of Idaho, will also contribute $1000 to the recipients’ schools and $500 to the finalists’ schools.

She is involved in the Key and Forestry clubs as well as being a Link leader, a group of juniors and seniors dedicated to helping freshmen ease the transition into high school.
