ST. MARIES — Kelsey Auer capped off a monster of an upset for the Lumberjacks with two free throws with four seconds left, hitting the go-ahead shots to win a “Pack the Gym” game over Coeur d’Alene.

“It was a great win for us and the girls played with a lot of confidence and it showed,” Jay Sines said. “It was a tight one. We came back and it stayed pretty even. We came out a little bit cold in the third quarter and they were ahead by three points. It was back and forth we went and they tied it up with eight seconds left. Kelsey drove down and they fouled her, she made both of her foul shots. They missed a last-second shot from around midcourt. It was an exciting game.”

Auer nearly finished with a double-double for St. Maries (6-1), with 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists, six blocks and three steals. Alexis Cordell scored 14 points.

Our defensive communication has been great lately, and the kids are seeing the difference and how it gives us opportunities on offense. I thought our posts were moving the ball really well and getting the ball where we can be effective. Sandpoint, they’re young and play hard and I expect them to be right there in that league. I’m proud of our girls. Their effort was excellent tonight.”
