PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Post Falls wins big again for 2-0 start

SPOKANE — The Post Falls Trojans came out firing with 29 points in the fourth quarter and pulled away from West Valley 71-52 on Saturday to finish 2-0 at the season-opening Border Clash at West Valley High.

Post Falls (2-0) was tied at 42 after the third quarter, before finishing the nonleague game strong.

“We’ve played eight quarters and seven of them I’ve been happy with,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “I was not happy with our third quarter and we had a great finish against a very scrappy West Valley team.”

Max McCullough scored 23 points and Jake Pfennigs added 21 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Trojans. Zach Hillman had seven points, six assists and five rebounds.

“Cameron McKeown came in off the bench and had a very good second half for us,” McLean said. “He played with great composure.”

Brennen Folkins scored 17 points for West Valley.

Post Falls plays at East Valley on Thursday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Joey Naccarato poured in 17 points and added seven rebounds and five assists to lead the Vikings past Eastmont of Wenatchee in nonleague play at Elmer Jordan Court.

Brody Lundblad added 12 points, six assists and four steals and Bryce Bronson had eight points and seven boards for Coeur d’Alene (2-1), which travels to Colbert, Wash., on Tuesday to face Northwest Christian.

“It was a tale of two halves,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kurt Lundblad said. “Eastmont played well in the first half and we didn’t play with emotion or energy.

“In the second half, we made some adjustments defensively and we turned it around. Jakob Lynn had a great game defensively for us — he really set the tone in the second half. Eveybody contributed tonight — just a great team win.”

RATHDRUM — Kaden Davis and Daniel McDevitt each scored 14 points as the Hawks beat the visiting Badgers at Hawk Court.

Davis hit four three-pointers, three in the second quarter as Lakeland (1-0) outscored Bonners Ferry 20-4 to build a 36-17 halftime lead.

“We played some pretty good defense, got some transition buckets, and then those 3s opened it up,” Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said.

Forest Zubaly added 13 points and 12 rebounds, Andrew Knight 13 points and Dylan Knight six assists for Lakeland, which visits West Valley on Tuesday.

“We came out a little shaky in the first quarter, but started to play solid in the final three quarters,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. “Defensively, we played with more energy tonight. It was a good win for us.”

James Carlson scored 13 points for Lake City (1-1), which hosts Gonzaga Prep on Tuesday.

PENDLETON, Ore. — Sophomore Jack Reeves drained 3 of 4 attempts from beyond the arc as part of his 13 points, but the Bulldogs struggled early for the second straight day, falling to the team from Bend, Ore., in the third place game of the Pendleton tournament.

With his team featuring a mix of new varsity players and football players who just started practicing, Bulldogs coach Kent Leiss expected his team will need a little time to find its rhythm.

Matthew Curtiss scored seven points to go with two steals, and Paul Sundquist added four points, four boards and two assists, but Sandpoint (0-2) trailed 48-14 after a tough first half.

The Bulldogs (0-2), who lost 63-48 to Pendleton on Friday, host Kellogg on Tuesday night.

TEKOA, Wash. — Jake Sieler hit 3 of 6 3-pointers and scored 17 points for the visiting Lumberjacks in the nonleague game.

Brady Martin scored 11 of his 15 points in the first quarter for St. Maries (2-0), and also had 11 rebounds. The ’Jacks started the game with a 16-0 run.

“That was a big part of it — getting the ball to the posts early,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “That allowed us to get in our press, and we got some steals early.”

Drake Lounsbury had seven rebounds and five steals for St. Maries, which visits Lakeside on Tuesday.

WELLPINIT, Wash — Takota Abrahamson scored 23 points to lead the Knights past the Panthers in the consolation game of the Wellpinit tournament, giving first-year Lakeside coach Butch Nomee his first win of the season.

“The whole game, we had a great team effort from all the guys,” Nomee said. “To have the boys start the season with three games back-to-back, the last two in Washington with a shot clock, the mental fatigue of that could have worn them out. They stuck with it and I’m proud of the effort they put forth tonight.”

Milo Bighead scored 17 points for Lakeside (1-2), which hosts St. Maries on Tuesday.
