COEUR d’ALENE — Haywood Irwin, a 6-2 freshman guard from Foss High in Tacoma, scored 15 points and was named tourney MVP on Sunday as NIC outlasted Everett (Wash.) Community College 108-100 in the championship game of the Bigfoot-Cardinal Classic at Rolly Williams Court.

“It was a huge breakout tournament for him,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “A couple of those games we might have lost without him. He was a huge spark.”

Brayon (BJ) Blake had 28 points and 13 rebounds for NIC (11-0), ranked 17th in the NJCAA. Braian Angola-Rodas had 31 points and six assists.

NIC withstood a 43-point outburst from quick guard Derek Brown Jr., who hit 21 of 23 free throws.

Kyle Guice of NIC was also named to the all-tourney team, along with Brown and teammate Quadir Williams of Everett, Ryker Pierce of Big Bend and Race Martin of Spokane.

NIC’s men and women play host to Columbia Basin College on Tuesday.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Tournament MVP Monica Landdeck’s 3-pointer staved off an Umpqua rally, and Maci Benedict hit key free throws to seal it as the Cardinals won the Bulldog Classic.

Landdeck finished with seven 3s and 23 points for NIC (8-1). Shelby Cloninger added 15 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists, and Stormee Van Belle, also named to the all-tournament team, added 12 points and seven boards.

“It was a great game,” NIC coach Chris Carlson said. “They had us down as much as 12 early. We came back and took an 18-point lead in the third, and they came back and tied it midway through the fourth.”
