PREP SOFTBALL: Scholwinski, Vikings blow by Lewiston

| April 14, 2013 9:00 PM

LEWISTON - Lindsie Scholwinski struck out 13 in the first game and six more in five innings of relief in the second game, and the Coeur d'Alene Vikings swept the Lewiston Bengals 6-1 and 3-2 in 5A Inland Empire League softball play Saturday at wind-swept Airport Park.

In the second game, Sydni Parker's RBI single to left-center scored Rashell Shaffer from third base with the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth for Coeur d'Alene (9-1, 3-0 5A IEL).

Both games were played with the wind either blowing in from the outfield, or across the diamond.

"Usually it's windy here, but today it was unbelievable," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "Every ball that was hit in the air was an adventure."

Bieber said one fly ball had the center fielder digging in pursuit - only to have it land near the right field foul line. Another popup that appeared headed for shallow left field instead reversed direction and was caught by Scholwinski in the circle.

"Scholwinski was just magic on the mound," Bieber said. "She was just throwing BBs."

Lewiston dropped to 6-6, 0-4.

Coeur d'Alene travels to Lake City on Tuesday.
