Madsen, Mason lead Timberlake past Kellogg

KELLOGG - Kelly Madsen scored 18 points, Taylor Mason 17 for the visiting Timberlake Tigers, who jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised to a 62-34 victory over the Kellogg Wildcats in Intermountain League girls basketball Tuesday night at Andrews Gymnasium.

Mason scored 12 of her points in the first half for Timberlake (8-8, 3-2 IML), which travels to St. Maries on Thursday.

Kelsey Carter had 10 points for Kellogg (9-7, 1-3), which visits Priest River next Tuesday.

SPOKANE - Lexi Turkenburg scored 27 points including 12 of 15 from the free-throw line, to lead the visiting Panthers to the nonleague victory.

"We came out a little slow, and in the second quarter we picked up the defensive intensity," Charter coach Logan Grant said. "Our team defense was great - we were all over the place getting the basketball."

Coeur d'Alene Charter (6-12) plays host to Wallace on Thursday.

PLUMMER - The game was tied at halftime, then the visiting Wampus Cats outscored the Knights 34-10 in the second half to clinch a tie for the North Star League title.

Brocklynn Thornton scored 14 points, Dimi Kailang 13 and Tess Vogel 10 for Clark Fork (9-4, 6-0 NSL), which switched from man-to-man to a zone defense and back throughout the second half.

"They went into a switching style of defense, and we didn't react very well to that," said Lakeside coach Ron Miller, whose Knights trailed by two points midway through the third quarter, only to see the Wampus Cats score on six straight possessions to pull away. "We went flat offensively, and they shot really well (13 of 24 from the field) in the second half."

Shannon Miller scored 11 points for Lakeside (6-8, 3-2), which plays host to Mullan on Friday.

HARRISON FLATS - Tony Branz scored 19 points to lead the visiting Miners past the Warriors in North Star League play.

Tyler Beard added 14 points, Brock Arthun 12 for Wallace (7-7, 4-1 NSL), which went on a 7-0 run in the final minute of the first half to built a 10-point halftime lead.

"They've just got a heckuva squad," Kootenai coach Andrew Whipple said. "They can score a whole bunch of points."

Jake Pfeiffer had nine points and six steals for Kootenai, (4-8, 2-3), which travels to the Post Falls JV on Friday.

PLUMMER - Johnathon Nomee scored 13 points and the host Knights outscored the Wampus Cats 19-2 in the second quarter and pulled away for the North Star League victory.

"We came out pretty sluggish in the first quarter, and then our defensive intensity stepped up in the second quarter, and that caused them to turn it over quite a bit," Lakeside coach Bill Brebner said. "Clark Fork, they hustled their butts off - they won the first and third quarters, that's for sure."

Lamont Higgins and Joseph Chapman added 12 points each for Lakeside (9-5, 4-0 NSL), which plays host to Mullan on Friday.

Zack Klein led Clark Fork (2-8, 1-2) with 13 points.

PRIEST RIVER - Chris Jackson (138 pounds) and Delvin Nelson stepped into the varsity lineup and came out with a pair of pins for the Hawks in nonleague dual matches against Bonners Ferry and Selkirk at Priest River High.

Lakeland defeated Selkirk 60-18 and beat the Badgers 53-19.

"In our first match out against Selkirk, I was a little disappointed with our guys," Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. "Selkirk forfeited a few matches, but we should have won a couple matches that we lost. But we pulled it together against Bonners Ferry and finished the night on a good note."

Lakeland competes in the North Idaho Rumble on Friday and Saturday at Coeur d'Alene High.
