Lums win Border tourney

| June 6, 2011 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Colin Comack went 3 for 4 with two homers and four RBIs as the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen beat the Spokane Blue Devils 8-4 in the championship game of the inaugural Border Wars American Legion baseball tournament Sunday at McEuen Field.

Comack hit a two-run homer in the second inning, added an RBI double in the third and hit a solo homer in the fifth for Coeur d'Alene (7-3), which went 5-0 in the tourney.

It marked the second straight tournament the Lums made it to the title game. Last weekend, Coeur d'Alene reached the championship game in Missoula before falling to the host Mavericks.

"I had our players make goals for the season, because we are in so many tournaments," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "We wanted to get into the finals in every one of them. At the end of the day, we accomplished one of our goals. It's nice that the players are taking ownership; they played with some intensity today."

Comack's RBI double in the third broke a 4-all tie. Winning pitcher Jason Pattis followed Comack's double with a two-run single.

Coeur d'Alene opens class AA North Idaho League play Tuesday, hosting Sandpoint in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at McEuen.

SPOKANE - The Cardinals finished 3-1 in pool play at Jackson Field after the win over the 49ers at the Border Wars tournament, but it wasn't enough to get them into the title game.

Prairie, the Spokane Northstars and Spokane Blue Devils tied for first place in pool play, but the Blue Devils advanced to the title game because of fewest runs allowed in their games.

"It would have been cool to have an all-North Idaho final, but we just came up a little bit short," Prairie coach Dustin Frank said.

Joe Schwalbach went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Prairie (5-1). Luke Howell hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, Tony Davidson was 3 for 3 and drove in a run, and Riley Denney hit a two-run double in the third.

Prairie travels to Coeur d'Alene on Wednesday for a North Idaho League doubleheader at 5 p.m. at McEuen Field.
