Occasionally I make authoritative statements, such as English Setters are better hunting dogs than German Shorthairs. During a lucid interval, I realized that I am not an authority on hunting dogs and I did not quote an authority. This was an opinion or a belief and I should have prefaced the comment with “I am making this up, but I think I am right.”
Authors of letters to the editor would be well-served to have lucid intervals. I’m making this up, but I think I am right.
