COEUR d'ALENE - If you've ever been to Ireland, you've seen it: The neighborhood pub. It's a cozy, friendly place where locals meet to share a story and a pint. But if you can't make it to Ireland, don't worry. We have our own neighborhood pub right here in Coeur d'Alene.
Kelly's Irish Pub & Grill is a family-owned business on Fourth Street. Its goal is to deliver great food, exceptional service and fantastic value. "I want it to be a pub atmosphere," said owner Meg Sullivan. "A place where families and singles can come - even couples for date nights."
They have 10 beers on tap, primarily Northwest microbrews, as well as an eclectic selection of bottled beer. And on Tuesday nights they have music, with the Powell Brothers.
But the best thing about Kelly's, besides the beer and the live music, is the food. Just about everything is made in-house: corned beef, salad dressings, sauces - even Irish spicy mustard made with Guinness.
Sullivan is quick to boast about her staff: Amber, Billy, Danielle and Mike.
"I'm so proud of my cooks and servers," she said. "We're trying to get back to making everything from scratch and enjoying the people. That's our goal."
Along with comfort foods like meat loaf and corned beef, they have specialties like Irish nachos (with potatoes and corned beef), hand-formed cheezy tater tots, and beer-battered burgers. Sullivan soon plans to offer a selection of homemade desserts including ice cream, churned on-site.
They host an open mic night every Thursday at 6 p.m., featuring local musicians performing original compositions.
Then there are the Powell Brothers. Tony and Dave Powell are "the most awesome guys in the world," Sullivan said. They play at Kelly's every Tuesday from 6-9 p.m., and are quickly gaining national recognition for their current undertaking: Creating America's first production line harp guitars in more than 100 years under the name Tonedevil Guitars, in Sandpoint.
In October, the brothers will be bringing the 12th Annual International Harp Guitar Gathering to Coeur d'Alene, and have recently completed a documentary, "The Hollow Arm," that's making the film festival rounds. The trailer is on YouTube, and they'll be hosting premiers this summer.
Check out their Facebook page or their website, www.tonedevilguitars.com. Or come hear them play on Tuesday.

Sullivan is proud of her neighborhood pub and is excited about welcoming new clients, who hopefully will become new friends.
"Good people, good food, good service. That, to me, is what a pub is - a gathering place where people can have fun," she said.
Kelly's is at 726 N. Fourth St. in Coeur d'Alene, (208) 667-1717.
