Coeur d’Alene Area Swim Team member Aren Kariotis competed in the Winter Junior National Championships on Dec. 5-8 in Austin, Texas. This meet features the fastest 18-and-under swimmers in the country, with several National Age Group Record holders representing the future of USA swimming. Last month, Kariotis competed in the Idaho high school championship and set a state record in the 100 butterfly. In Austin, he bested that time down by .25, which placed him 23rd of the 132 swimmers that competed in that event. He also competed in the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. After his meet events, he elected to time trial the 100 freestyle as well as one of the most grueling events, the 200 butterfly. He fared well in the 100 freestyle, posting a best time by .24 seconds. Aren’s 200 fly time of 1:53.42 was a five-second best time and would qualify him for next year’s meet. “Besides the swim, Kariotis handled himself quite well against tough competition," CAST coach Jade Sobek said. "Not many swimmers choose the 200 fly, let alone drop nearly 5 seconds at big meet like this. CAST and Cd'A community should be very proud of Aren’s accomplishments.” Aren, a senior at Lake City High School, is looking toward a future of swimming in college.
