The Press has received copies of two letters from Coeur d'Alene attorney Steve Bell, one asking the NAACP to investigate School Board Member Brent Regan and the other, demanding his resignation from the district.

Here are the letters:

Box l8968

Spokane, Wa, 99228 0968

Attn. Mrs. V. Anne Smith

re: racial remark by Cda School board Trustee Regan

I am asking that you launch an investigation for a civil rights violation by remarks made by school trustee member Regan.

At a public forum with over l00 people present, including legislators, he made a comment that people can't figure out what an assault weapon is “it's just BLACK and it LOOKS SCARY”, to which his wife then said “WELL, SO IS OBAMA”

Once again North Idaho racism is alive and well and thriving in North Idaho.

Regan then digs his hole even deeper by saying that all of this was a “humorous anecdote”. There is nothing humorous about any events where someone is discriminated against.

Regan then had the audacity to say that it NEVER occurred to him that this was a racial slur until someone of a different race than his, called him up and explained what its liked to be discriminated against..

Prejudice and racism is a learned behavior. Children are not born with this---they learn it from others.

Regan is setting a terrible example for the l0,000 school children of our district.

Our school district has an obligation to teach its children about respect for all races, and in particular, respect for the President of our country.

I have lived here for over 40 years. Long after the demise of Richard Butler, many people in this community still discriminate because of race. Coeur d'alene also has a reputation for hiding things under the rug, and not taking action when it needs to be taken. Our own Human Relations group has taken a patsy position, and they have NOT requested that Regan resign.

Regan needs to resign immediately. I have requested a Regan resignation by letter to our school district. I ask that you investigate this matter, and take appropriate action, including a demand that Regan immediately resign. Politics and the “good old boy system” should not let Regan or our school district tolerate this disgusting public racist behavior.

Steve Bell, attorney

Coeur d'alene School District

attn. Superintendent Hazel Bauman

re: Brent Regan

Thanks to your trustee Regan, racism is once again, alive and well in Cda, Idaho. In front of l00 people and legislators he made the comment about gun control and that people couldn't figure out what an assault weapon was and “its black and looks scary” To which his wife replied, “Well, so is Obama”

When confronted with the prejudiced nature of these comments, Regan digs his hole even deeper and says “it was a humorous anecdote”. To those who are discriminated because of color, do they consider such comments humorous. He goes on and says that it never occurred to him that the comments could be construed as racist. One of your third graders could figure out the racist nature of that comment.

You were here and saw the national damage that this community suffered at the hands of Richard Butler. Racial minorities were intimidated by him. Whenever I traveled, I was confronted with the black eye North Idaho received. The reality is that many people in this community still discriminate because of race. If your district is not aware of this prejudice you are blind.

I had the privilege of speaking to 20 very young people at the KROC recently. I explained that we must treat all people equally. They did not understand this because they already treat people equally.

Prejudice and racism is a taught and learned behavior.

Your school has a duty to teach people respect for all races. You also have a duty to teach respect for our President where Regan and racist wife, obviously have none. This is the example from above, that you set for your students---they read the papers.

You now have someone at the top of your education system saying he had no idea what was going on until someone called him and explained. This is the example that will trickle down to your students in the event Regan remains as a trustee.

I am contacting the NAACP in Spokane to give all details of this incident. I do this because having lived here for years, I know that lots of things get quietly pushed under the rug here for political reasons. To leave Regan in, you are endorsing his disgusting public racist behavior. I am calling for the immediate resignation of Regan and I have many people behind me. I await your earliest response.

Sincerely yours,

Steve Bell

Conflating "black" with "scary" has racist undertones. If not intended that way, it at least evinces a level of cultural cluelessness.

The most telling quote here is from makmoud mahiun " he bears watching" Yep, we are going to keep an eye on him." Mr. Regan better think right cause we got him sized up for the tar and feahers, perhaps even a lynching? He better not step too far out of line? The far left radicals are on full display. Who's next?

The Human Rights Commission was slated for closure a couple of years ago due to budget problems with the State as a useless program. It wasn't closed, however, but was just transferred to the Labor Department and goes on. It's like a game of Wack-A-Mole, pound the head on one hole and knock it down, and it just pops up in another hole. Two problems with the Human Rights Commission are:

    1. The alledged "racist" word is overused and worn out. It applies to anything somebody doesn't agree with, or who wants to change the subject, or who refuses to answer a question or wants to hide an illegal activity.

    2. The Human Rights Commission offers a "reward" of $1,000 for a lead and conviction for an alledged comment or action which might result in a court conviction. Offering that kind of incentive only baits people looking for easy cash.

Asking for resignation from anybody is ludicrious (means joke). Recommend telling them to stuff it.

Hahaha, This liberal media has done it again, took the limelight off the real issue of 2nd amendment violations being done by the 1/2 white 1/4 black, 1/4 muslim president guy, and focused in on a supposed joke made, and now lets all call it racist....

Calling for Regan's resignation is a bit of an overreaction, but Mr. Regan certainly bears watching. Once is a lapse in judgment, a slip-up. Twice would be a pattern of poor judgment, three times would be grounds for immediately ending his tenure.

In other words, Mr. Regan: we're willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, but you will need to watch your words and your actions a bit more carefully, if you want us to believe that you possess the patience, forbearance, thoughtfulness, and good judgment necessary to be an effective school board member.

    Racist remark? Come on people.

Obama is a black man, so he is BLACK, and what he is doing to this country is SCARY and more dangerous than any assault weapon could ever be. So where's the racism?

I agree Mr. and Mrs. Regan.

These racialists are not content until they have destroyed anyone who they perceive as their enemy. No slight is too light for the "racist under every rock" gang.

Until their tactics are turned against them, and their tender, sheltered lives are turned upside-down, they will continue their feeding frenzies every time they smell blood.

It is a sad day when someone cannot make a mistake, apologize for it and our community cannot forgive and move on.

Lawyers, anger, rage, division are the result of the race baiters who don't really want unity and peace.
They care more about agenda, attention and power.

Tony Stewart, Norm Gissell, Steve Bell, and the NAACP are examples of race baiters and they should be ashamed of themselves. Forgive, look at the best in people not the worst and move on!

Steve Bell is an embarassment to the community of Cda for these recommendations. Straight up was right on in his comment on this matter. He, like the Human Rights Task Force, have exhibited classic reverse discrimination towards this trivial act of freedom of speech in which Regan already apologized.
Mr. Regan should hire the NAACP to sue these entities for defamation of character. Sick of these overly sensitive PC's and racially sensitive crybabies. Don't they have a life?
Wish the press would do a survey on who is right on this one?

Finally someone sticks out of the crowd for the race sniffers to lash out at. Mr Bell probably works for Dewey screwum and Howe and sees dollars down the line. It was not a smart thing to say for a public official but far misses the mark of outright racism. Many people see this administration who is in constant campaign mode insulting the opposition and anyone who disagrees with but to disagree means you are a racist. A apology is all thats needed to settle this but folks like Mr Bell want anyone who hints at criticising the president ruined and pounded into submission. Its a bit of a hoot to hear those who railed against Bush and Reagon now demand civility for their guy. A MSNBC commentator recently on a show about the lack of civility in politics referred to Republicans as Old Crackers with no apology. The Hypocracy is astounding and a insult to our integrity folks like Mr Bell truly think we are dumb sheep to be led by phoney outrage.

Tony Stewart and HREI no more reflect the aspirations of the Declaration of Independence wherein all humans are created equal than Richard Butler represented the truth proclaimed by Jesus. In Tony's eyes, Patriots need be sacrificed at the altar of godless humanism so he is free to do as he pleases without reminder of guilt.

Mr. Bell, something else struck me about your letter to the school board, and it has absolutely nothing to do with race.

Where does this notion that we "must" respect the president, simply because he is president, come from? Respect must be EARNED, and our current president has not earned, and therefore does not have, my respect. If Mr Regan also demonstrates a lack of respect for the president, I suspect it is due to his policies and character, not his race.

How can any of us in good conscience respect a president who claims he has the "right" to indefinitely imprison or even assassinate American citizens, without the benefit of due process of law, and even without even being charged with any crime? That is exacly what President Obama did when he signed into law the NDAA of 2012 on December 31, 2011. How can we respect a man who, as commander in chief of the U.S. military, has murdered far more innocent children with predator drones than the mentally deranged kid murdered in Connecticut?

I will not pretend to respect a war criminal, murderer, and traitor, no matter what the color of his skin might be.

This is the most ridiculousness I have ever seen from a lawyer! Steve Bell you are not worthy of the title of attorney, you have no comprehension of the 1st Amendment! Go back to school and learn something before you start accusing people you do not know, of being a racist! For one you are just a typical good for nothing but lawyer, two you should leave the state if you do not like the way people exercise their rights here, and three, the statement made by Mr. Regan was not racist, just a fact that the majority of republicans believe!

Oh and for all the people that have a problem with the comment made, get a life! If it was not the the Cda press reporting the comment, no students would have ever heard the statement, so if anyone wants to place blame on the kids hearing it, blame the press for making a mountain out of a molehill.
I guess the press thinks they have to create " news" now since they are so terrible about reporting real news! I am ashamed to even read this tabloid for news anymore!

Mary............if the quoted joke by Regan's wife relayed to that audience through Mr Regan by the Press was inaccurate then the Press owes Mr Regan and its readers an apology. Mr Regan does not deny the quoted joke. He just denies its intent(whatever that means)

Mr Regan is apparently not that smart or else he would have considered the consequences of his speech and the language contained therein. I don't mind your defense of a friend but I do mind a mindless defense of that which is....indefensible. You and so many many others in here are rationalizing and excusing Mr Regan's behavior . That says a lot about you and those like you.

What is smart , however, is Tony Stewart not calling for Mr Regan's resignation and publicly calling out every board member to state their position on Mr. Regan's behavior. "You" can hear the Elmer Fudd like stumbling over one's words as I type.....Tony also said he hoped this incident would not reflect negatively or affect negatively the upcoming school district levy for the children and families in the school district. He really turned the current make up of the board around on that one.....I don't know if you see the irony of that statement.

This is a political disaster for the board and supporters of the current make up of the puts them in a public position of accountability they never thought in a million years they'd have to confront....

I just got off the phone with Steve Bell. He and I have worked on several public projects together and have always been friendly, so I called him. I asked him if he knows Brent Regan. He said, "Not at all, I wouldn't know him from Adam." So I told him that I do know Brent, and that he's a good guy, not racist at all and a man of high integrity. I went on to explain to Steve that Brent is extremely smart, and is a very successful inventor ( he and his father invented the cardiac stent, just one in the long list of Brent's accomplishments). Sometimes very smart people see things differently, I said to Steve, and they don't always realize how regular people interpret the same info. He never thought the comment was racist but he realized that others may have taken it that way and he has apologized. Steve would not accept that perhaps he jumped to judgement without any information except what he read in the media.

"Ignore those racists Aryans. Don't allow them to have their message carried in the Press."

Uh, lets see,,,whose mantra is this?

Uh, lets see,,,who is not following that mantra now?

Uh, lets see,,,is all the teeth gnashing and screeching against Brent Regan creating a certain image of North Idaho, both within our community and likely throughout the nation really worth it?

Is the image of, "us" being a bunch of toothless racists that we have worked so hard to eliminate being helped or hurt by the full-press court of publicity really worth it?

Is publicly calling in the NAACP going to help out with our efforts to distance ourselves from the dank, dark days of Richard Butler and the horrifically horrible reputation that the rest of the nation judged us by?

Is Jobs Plus thrilled to death with the negative images now being created that they will now have to try to erase in promoting our area to potential new businesses really worth all the vitriol and nastiness?

Is stirring up the small minority of the "no denying that they exist among us" racists and the nasty actions that they potentially will take really worth it?

Is driving a school board member away just so that, "your side" can get one of your own back onto the school board really worth trashing our entire community's image in the media and nation?

Is this persecution of Brent Regan really worth it? Are the very publicly attacks in the media really worth the overall priced to our community?

    A school board seat? Really?

    Think about it.

I stirred the pot myself on these threads, but I am bowing out after this post in the best interest of the community that I and my family call home.

Why is it relevant that Steve Bell is an attorney? It's not.

What special insight, as an "attorney", does he provide versus a lay person? None.

If a custodian had written ltrs to the NAACP/School District... Would the title be, Custodian tells NAACP...? No-- and more than likely there wouldn't be an article about it anyways.

Does anyone really care that Steve Bell, the attorney, wrote some letters? Doubtful.

Really, what craziness. I've known Steve since we moved here in '94, I wouldn't say we are friends. But this guy has lost touch with the world around him. I guess once an attorney you can always be called an attorney and somehow that gives you automatic credence. I don't think Steve practices any more for a variety of reasons. Now I know he has good motives and does try to do good things for the community, but sit down with him and it won't take you long to see what I'm talking about. Now the press is using his fodder to bash Regan, and this so called racist remark which wasn't racist at all. It may be a put down on Obama, but not racism. I guess just because we have a black president you can't say anything negative about him as it will be racist. What hogwash. Its OK to make negative comments about white politicians when we dislike what they are doing, but that's not racism. Come on folks, cut the BS.
